pixiv FANBOX payment failed: Visa, Mastercard, PayPal and what still works

A pixiv FANBOX payment usually fails for one of four reasons that pixiv itself documents: the card did not pass 3D Secure verification, the card is a debit or prepaid type that FANBOX does not support, PayPal is blocked for that creator because they post R-18 content, or an earlier payment is still being processed. A fifth reason, the card’s own bank refusing a payment to a Japanese merchant, is common and is outside FANBOX’s control.

One thing the evidence does not support is the idea that FANBOX has stopped taking Visa or Mastercard. Other Japanese platforms have, and that history is why people assume it. FANBOX’s own help pages still list both. This guide separates what pixiv has published from what forum posts guess, and sets out which payment routes are open to someone outside Japan. It reflects pixiv’s help centre as it stood on 7 October 2026.

Key points

  • FANBOX still lists Visa, MasterCard, JCB and American Express as supported credit cards.
  • 3D Secure is the usual sticking point. FANBOX says a card can fail to register even when the details are correct, and that it “will not know the reason”.
  • Debit and prepaid cards are not guaranteed. Only one Japanese prepaid card is confirmed.
  • PayPal is blocked for R-18 creators for anyone who had not used PayPal on FANBOX before 21 March 2024.
  • pixivcoban and convenience store payment are for Japan only.
  • A failed monthly charge ends the subscription for that creator until you pledge again.

What FANBOX accepts

pixiv’s help page on supported payment methods, last edited in June 2026, lists four.

Method Who can use it Limits FANBOX states
Credit card: Visa, MasterCard, JCB, American Express Anyone with a supported card Debit and prepaid cards “may not be supported”
PayPal, funded by bank account or card Anyone, for all-ages creators Not available for R-18 creators unless you used PayPal on FANBOX before 21 March 2024
pixivcoban Residents of Japan “A service only available to residents of Japan”
Convenience store Japan only 120 JPY handling fee per pledge. Not available on the last day of the month

FANBOX says it charges no handling fee for PayPal, credit cards or pixivcoban.

For readers outside Japan, that table reduces to two routes: a credit card, or PayPal for creators who post all-ages work only.

The causes of a failed payment

What you see Likely cause Documented by pixiv? What to do
The card will not register 3D Secure verification failed Yes Contact the card issuer
“The information entered is incorrect, or the card cannot be used” Wrong details, or a card type FANBOX cannot take Yes Check the details, then try a different card
“This card can not be registered”, with a note about the usage limit The card’s limit or the issuer’s settings Yes Check the limit with the issuer
PayPal is missing or refused for one creator The creator posts R-18 content Yes Use a credit card
“Your payment is currently being processed” A previous payment is still pending Yes Wait. No new payment or plan change is possible meanwhile
Payment went through and support does not show Processing delay Yes. Up to 15 minutes Wait, then check your supported creators page
A card that works elsewhere is declined The issuer blocking a foreign or flagged merchant No. This sits with the bank Ask the bank to allow the payment
Everything fails for one creator only The creator has blocked you Yes Nothing to fix on the payment side

The quoted error messages are the ones pixiv names on its page I can’t support a creator.

3D Secure, and why FANBOX cannot tell you more

This is the cause pixiv describes most fully. Its page on card registration says: “Your credit card may fail to register even if there are no errors in your credit card information.” It explains that FANBOX uses 3D Secure, and that “if an error occurs when registering a credit card, there might be an issue with 3D Secure not being able to certify the credit card”.

3D Secure is the extra step where your bank confirms a purchase, by app notification, text code or password. It is run by the bank that issued the card. If that bank does not support it for the card, cannot reach you, or decides the request looks unusual, the check fails.

pixiv is plain about its own limits: “FANBOX will not know the reason why verification may have failed.” That is the reason support requests to pixiv about declined cards tend to end with advice to call the bank. The bank is the only party that knows.

Debit and prepaid cards

FANBOX’s page on supported cards names one prepaid card as confirmed, the VANDLE CARD, which is a Japanese product topped up at convenience stores and ATMs. Then it adds two lines:

  • “Other prepaid cards and debit cards may not be supported.”
  • “We cannot answer questions about other prepaid cards. Please contact your credit card company directly.”

Many people outside Japan pay online with a debit card that carries a Visa or Mastercard logo. The logo does not make it a credit card for this purpose. A debit card that fails here is behaving as pixiv warns it might.

A prepaid card has a second risk. FANBOX says that once a prepaid card’s balance runs out, “your support will stop automatically”.

PayPal and R-18 creators

On 21 March 2024, FANBOX announced that “due to various circumstances”, PayPal “will no longer be available to support creators posting R-18 content”. The restriction applies to “those who have never used PayPal for transactions on pixivFANBOX before March 21st, 2024 at 18:00 Japan time”.

Two details matter.

  • It is about the creator’s content, not the supporter’s account. FANBOX says “you can still use PayPal to support creators posting content for All-Ages”.
  • Existing PayPal users were left alone. The cut-off is by first use. An account that had paid by PayPal before the date keeps the option.

pixiv gave no reason beyond “various circumstances”. PayPal’s own rules prohibit digital adult content, which is set out in our page on whether PayPal allows adult content. FANBOX’s troubleshooting page now words it this way: “Depending on your past PayPal usage history, PayPal payments may not be available for certain creators, especially those posting R-18 content.”

So a supporter who joined after March 2024 and wants to back a creator of adult work has one route left from outside Japan: a credit card that passes 3D Secure.

The bank declines it

Banks decline card payments for reasons of their own: an unfamiliar foreign merchant, a currency they flag, or a recurring charge they did not expect. FANBOX’s pages cannot document this, since it happens before pixiv hears anything useful. If a card passes everywhere else and fails here, calling the issuer and asking them to allow payments to PIXIV FANBOX is the direct fix.

Has FANBOX stopped taking Visa or Mastercard?

Not according to anything pixiv has published. The supported cards page lists both, and it was edited in June 2026. We found no announcement from pixiv suspending a card brand on FANBOX.

The belief is reasonable, because it has happened nearby.

Platform What happened When Source
DMM and FANZA Ended their payment contract with Mastercard, saying terms “didn’t align” July 2022 Automaton
pixiv, including FANBOX and BOOTH Updated terms to ban transactions for certain content, citing the rules of “international credit card companies” Effective 15 December 2022 Automaton
pixiv FANBOX PayPal blocked for new users supporting R-18 creators 21 March 2024 pixiv FANBOX
DLsite Suspended Visa, Mastercard and American Express, leaving JCB April 2024 Wikipedia
Melonbooks Halted Mastercard and Visa payments 19 December 2024 Wikipedia

The pattern is real, and FANBOX is part of it in two ways. It tightened its content rules in 2022, and it lost PayPal for adult content in 2024. What it has not done, on the public record, is lose a card brand.

The 2022 change explains why. Automaton reported that pixiv listed content such as sexual exploitation of minors, incest and bestiality, “stating such content also goes against the rules and policies of international credit card companies”, and asked users to take such content down or set it to private. pixiv’s response to card company rules was to remove the content the rules object to. DLsite’s was different, and it ended up without the cards. Our comparison of DLsite and Steam covers what DLsite built in their place.

The card rules themselves are explained in the Visa and Mastercard adult content policy.

What about pixivcoban?

Forum advice often suggests buying pixivcoban, pixiv’s stored-value balance, and paying with that. Automaton described the general idea when writing about other Japanese platforms: users buy a site’s own currency by card and then spend it, which puts “a layer of cushioning” between the card payment and the content.

For FANBOX, pixiv’s help page is direct: “pixivcoban is a service only available to residents of Japan.” A supporter outside Japan who follows a workaround to obtain it is doing something pixiv does not offer them. Whether such a balance would be honoured, or refunded if it were not, is not something pixiv’s pages promise. We would not rely on it.

What happens when the monthly charge fails

FANBOX pledges cover one calendar month. pixiv’s page on when pledges are charged says the first is taken on the day you start, and later ones “roughly between the 1st and the 5th day of each month”.

If that automatic charge fails, the page on payment errors says: “you will automatically stop supporting the creator”, and FANBOX emails you. There is a grace of sorts. “If you pledge again in the same month, your Fan status will not be discontinued”, and the start date on your Fan Card does not change. Leave it until the next month and the start date resets.

Two practical points follow.

  • Starting late in a month costs a full month. The first charge covers the current calendar month, and the next comes at the start of the following one.
  • A card that expires quietly ends every subscription on it at the next charge. Update the payment method before the 1st.

What shows on your statement

pixiv’s page on payment history names says: “You will not see the name of the creator on FANBOX.” The statement shows PIXIV FANBOX, or the same name in Japanese script, and “the way the name is displayed may vary based on the credit card company”.

That is also the name to give a bank when asking it to allow the payment.

If you are a creator

A supporter’s failed payment is a lost supporter unless someone tells them what to do. Three things are worth putting on a FANBOX page.

  • Say which methods work for your page. If you post R-18 content, new supporters cannot use PayPal. Saying so saves them a failed attempt.
  • Tell overseas supporters to use a credit card, and that debit cards may fail.
  • Do not depend on one platform. FANBOX changed its content terms in 2022 and its PayPal access in 2024, both with about a month’s notice or less. Our pages on Patreon’s NSFW rules and on how payment processors decide what can be sold cover the alternatives and why they move together.

What is still unknown

  • Why PayPal was restricted. pixiv said only “due to various circumstances”.
  • How many overseas cards fail 3D Secure on FANBOX. pixiv publishes no figures and says it cannot see the reasons.
  • Whether any card brand’s position on FANBOX is under review. Nothing has been announced. DLsite’s suspension came with little warning.
  • Which foreign debit cards work. pixiv will not say, and directs users to their card company.

How this page was put together

The payment methods, error messages and billing rules are taken from pixiv’s FANBOX help centre, read on 7 October 2026. The help centre’s records show the payment methods and supported cards pages were last edited in June 2026. The PayPal restriction is quoted from FANBOX’s own announcement of 21 March 2024. The history of other platforms follows Automaton and the Wikipedia articles listed under Sources.

We did not make a test payment. The studio has no FANBOX page and this guide describes what pixiv has published. Advice from forums is mentioned only where pixiv’s own pages contradict it.

This page was written on 7 October 2026 and will be updated if pixiv changes its supported payment methods. To report an error, see the corrections standard.

Questions

Why did my pixiv FANBOX payment fail?

The causes FANBOX documents are a card that fails 3D Secure verification, a debit or prepaid card it does not support, PayPal being unavailable for creators who post R-18 content, and an earlier payment that is still processing. FANBOX says it is not told why a card's verification failed.

Does pixiv FANBOX accept Visa and Mastercard?

Yes. FANBOX's help centre lists Visa, MasterCard, JCB and American Express as supported credit cards, on a page last edited in June 2026. It has not announced a block on any card brand. A Visa or Mastercard that fails is being declined for another reason.

Why can't I use PayPal on FANBOX?

Since 21 March 2024, PayPal cannot be used to support creators who post R-18 content unless the account had already used PayPal on FANBOX before that date. PayPal still works for creators who post all-ages content.

Can I pay for FANBOX with a debit card or prepaid card?

Possibly not. FANBOX says prepaid and debit cards other than the VANDLE CARD, a Japanese prepaid card, may not be supported, and that it cannot answer questions about them. It tells users to contact the card company.

Can I use pixivcoban to pay for FANBOX from outside Japan?

FANBOX's help page says pixivcoban is a service only available to residents of Japan. Convenience store payment is also available in Japan only.

What happens to my subscription if a FANBOX payment fails?

If the automatic charge at the start of a month fails, FANBOX stops your support for that creator and emails you. If you pledge again in the same month, your fan status and start date are kept.

What shows on a card statement for a FANBOX payment?

FANBOX says the creator's name is not shown. The statement displays PIXIV FANBOX or a Japanese-script form of the same name, depending on the card company.

When does FANBOX charge my card?

The first pledge is charged on the day you start, for the current calendar month. After that FANBOX says payments are taken automatically roughly between the 1st and the 5th of each month.
