The best Patreon alternative for an NSFW creator depends on where the audience is and what is being sold. For Western adult creators the usual answer is SubscribeStar’s adult site. For creators with Japanese fans it is pixivFANBOX, Fantia or Ci-en. For finished games, a store is usually better than a membership platform. And some well-known alternatives, Gumroad and Ko-fi among them, do not allow explicit work at all.
Fees are the other half of the question, and much of what is written about them is out of date. Patreon now charges new creators 10 per cent. SubscribeStar’s adult site listed the same figure when we read it. Several Japanese platforms raised their rates for adult creators in 2025.
This page compares the main alternatives on what adult content they allow, what they charge and how fans can pay. It is written for adult artists, writers and game developers. Every rule and figure is taken from the platforms’ own pages or named reports as they stood on 18 October 2026. It is not financial advice.
Key points
- SubscribeStar.adult is built for adult creators. It listed a 10% service fee on 18 October 2026.
- pixivFANBOX allows R-18 work. Its fee for adult creators is reported at 12.9% since September 2025.
- Fantia allows adult work. Its fee for illustrated work is reported at 12.5% since December 2025.
- Ci-en is DLsite’s creator platform. It suits developers who already sell on DLsite.
- itch.io sells games, not memberships. The default share is 10% and the developer sets it.
- Gumroad and Ko-fi ban explicit work. Both cite payment rules or their own guidelines.
- Patreon still allows adult content. It charges new creators 10%.

Payment processing, payout and currency fees come on top of every platform fee.
SubscribeStar.adult
SubscribeStar runs two sites, a general one at SubscribeStar.com and an adult one at SubscribeStar.adult, which was branded SubscribeStar.art when we visited. The adult site describes itself as a monetisation platform for NSFW digital artists, and approves each creator by hand.
Fees. Its pricing page listed a platform service fee of 10 per cent, with payment processing “from 3% + $0.30 to 10% + $0.40”. The general site listed 5 per cent. Much of what is written about SubscribeStar quotes 5 per cent for both; on the adult site, that is no longer what its pricing page says. We compare the two platforms in detail in SubscribeStar vs Patreon.
What helps. Creators can choose to pass most processing costs to subscribers. The site is used to adult creators and adult games.
What to watch. In March 2026 SubscribeStar changed its terms to ban several fictional themes, citing its payment partners, then said it would rework the wording, as Niche Gamer reported. Card payments are also declined more often than on mainstream platforms; see SubscribeStar card declined.
pixivFANBOX
pixivFANBOX is pixiv’s membership service, popular with Japanese illustrators and increasingly with overseas fans.
Content. R-18 work is allowed. Creators declare whether they post R-18 content, and pixiv can change the setting itself. AI-generated content is prohibited. For the wider rules, see does pixiv allow 18+ content.
Fees. FANBOX’s general fee is 10 per cent. Several sources, including the user-edited Niconico Pedia, report that the fee for creators of adult content rose to 12.9 per cent from 1 September 2025. We could not find pixiv’s own notice, so creators should check the figure shown in their dashboard.
Payment. On 21 March 2024, FANBOX stopped accepting PayPal for supporters of R-18 creators who had not used PayPal on FANBOX before. Credit cards still work, with 3D Secure. For the details, see pixiv FANBOX payment failed.
Fantia
Fantia is a Japanese fan club platform with a large adult section.
Fees. A July 2026 comparison of Japanese platforms, published as a press release by a company that runs a competing service, reports that Fantia raised its creator fee in December 2025, from 10 per cent to 12.5 per cent for illustrated work and from 15 to 17.5 per cent for live-action work. It also reports an 8 per cent buyer fee on purchases other than monthly plans since July 2025, and a 330 yen fee per withdrawal. We could not find Fantia’s own notice.
Payment. This is Fantia’s main weakness for overseas fans. Visa and Mastercard stopped working in May 2024. JCB, American Express and Japanese payment methods remain. See how to pay on Fantia.
Censorship. Japanese platforms require censorship of explicit images, and Fantia’s standards drew controversy as recently as May 2026, when it announced stricter mosaic guidelines, applying to previously posted works as well, as Dengeki Online reported. After a backlash, Automaton West reported on 1 June 2026 that Fantia had reverted the stricter rules for 2D (non-live-action) work on 29 May while it consulted legal bodies, with new standards and an effective date to be announced. For the background, see mosaic censorship explained.
Ci-en
Ci-en is the creator support platform run by DLsite’s operator. GameBusiness.jp reported its launch in April 2018. It combines monthly support with a development blog, and supporters can receive discount coupons for works sold on DLsite.
For adult game developers who already sell on DLsite, it is the natural membership option: the audience is already there, and the coupon link turns supporters into buyers. We could not find a published fee for creator support. For how DLsite compares as a store, see DLsite vs Steam.
itch.io
itch.io is a store, not a membership platform. It has no built-in recurring subscriptions. What it offers adult game developers is a place to sell builds and let supporters pay what they want.
Fees. Its creator FAQ explains that developers set the share itch.io takes, with a default of 10 per cent.
Content. Adult games are allowed if they are marked as having sensitive content. In July 2025 itch.io deindexed adult content under payment processor pressure, then brought much of it back; see the timeline of adult games removed from Steam and itch.io. UK visitors cannot see adult pages at all; see itch.io and UK age verification.
Many developers pair itch.io with a membership platform: supporters get builds through the membership, and everyone else buys on itch.io.
Ko-fi
Ko-fi is often recommended as a Patreon alternative, but not for explicit work. It allows mild NSFW content behind its NSFW tag, such as non-sexualised nudity and lightly sensual art, and bans sexually explicit content, including games built around it. See does Ko-fi allow NSFW content.
Ko-fi works for the safe-for-work side of an adult creator’s output, such as tips, sketches and general updates.
Gumroad
Gumroad is the other platform recommended in older lists of alternatives, and it is now closed to explicit work. Its help centre says that, “in accordance with the policies of our payment processing partners, including Stripe and PayPal”, it does not allow sales of sexually explicit content. The rule covers every medium, from illustration and animation to written and audio work.
Some adult-adjacent work can still be sold, such as cosplay focused on the costume rather than nudity, if it is flagged as adults-only. Gumroad says past sales of NSFW products are not affected.
Patreon is still an option
Patreon allows adult content on pages marked Adult/18+, under rules it revised in March 2026; see does Patreon allow NSFW content. Its standard fee for creators who published after 4 August 2025 is 10 per cent, and creators on older plans keep their rate while their page stays published.
For many adult creators, the realistic choice is not Patreon or an alternative, but Patreon and an alternative.
How to choose
- Start from your audience. Western fans pay most easily on Patreon and SubscribeStar. Japanese fans pay most easily on FANBOX, Fantia and Ci-en.
- Check what you make against each rule. Ko-fi and Gumroad exclude explicit work. SubscribeStar and Patreon exclude some themes.
- Check how fans pay. Fantia’s card limits and FANBOX’s PayPal block shut out some overseas supporters.
- Compare fees in the dashboard. Published figures have changed often since 2025.
- Run two. A second platform protects income against a sudden policy or payment change.
For the payment side of all this, see payment processors and adult games. For selling the finished game, see where adult games can be sold in 2026.
What is still unknown
- pixiv’s own figure for R-18 creators. The 12.9% figure comes from secondary sources.
- Fantia’s own fee notice. The December 2025 figures come from a competitor’s comparison.
- Ci-en’s fee. We found none published.
- Why SubscribeStar’s two sites list different fees. We found no announcement.
How this page was put together
SubscribeStar’s fees come from its pricing pages, read directly on 18 October 2026. Gumroad’s rule comes from its help centre article on adult content. The pixivFANBOX PayPal change comes from FANBOX’s own announcement; its fee figures come from secondary sources, named in the text. Fantia’s fees come from a July 2026 comparison issued by a competing company, which we flag as such. The other platforms’ rules come from earlier pages on this site, each linked, which cite the platforms’ own documents.
The studio does not run a page on any of these platforms, and nothing here is a first-hand account. To report an error, see the corrections standard.
Correction, 20 October 2026. The first version of this page said Fantia had announced stricter mosaic guidelines in May 2026 and did not say that it reverted them for 2D work on 29 May. The paragraph on Fantia’s censorship now includes the reversal. The correction is recorded in the corrections log.
Questions
What is the best Patreon alternative for NSFW creators?
For Western adult creators, usually SubscribeStar's adult site, which exists for adult work and approves creators by hand. For creators with a Japanese audience, pixivFANBOX, Fantia or DLsite's Ci-en. For selling finished games, a store such as itch.io or DLsite rather than a membership platform.
Does Gumroad allow NSFW content?
No, for sexually explicit work. Gumroad's help centre says that, in line with the policies of its payment partners including Stripe and PayPal, it does not allow sales of sexually explicit content, across all media. Some adult-adjacent work, such as cosplay focused on the costume, can be sold if flagged adults-only.
Does Ko-fi allow NSFW content?
Only mild NSFW content behind its NSFW tag, such as non-sexualised nudity and lightly sensual art. Ko-fi bans sexually explicit content, including games built around it.
Is SubscribeStar cheaper than Patreon?
Not on its adult site any more, on the published figures. SubscribeStar.adult's pricing page listed a 10% service fee on 18 October 2026, the same as Patreon's standard fee for new creators. Processing fees are added on both.
What are pixivFANBOX's fees for R-18 creators?
FANBOX's general fee is 10%. Several sources report that the fee for creators of adult content rose to 12.9% from 1 September 2025. We could not find pixiv's own notice, so check the figure in the creator dashboard.
Can international fans pay on Fantia and FANBOX?
With difficulty. Fantia stopped accepting Visa and Mastercard in May 2024 and relies on JCB, American Express and Japanese methods. FANBOX takes credit cards, but PayPal is unavailable for new supporters of R-18 creators since March 2024.
Should adult creators leave Patreon?
Not necessarily. Patreon still allows adult content on pages marked Adult/18+. Many creators run Patreon and one alternative side by side, so a payment or policy change on one platform does not stop all income.
