pixiv allows 18+ content. Its guidelines provide two age-restricted ratings, R-18 for sexual content and R-18G for extreme violence, and creators are expected to apply them when they post. What pixiv does not allow is uncensored explicit work, and since April 2024 accounts set to the United States or the United Kingdom see less of the site than everyone else.
pixiv is a Japanese illustration community, and its rules show it. The rating system is detailed, censorship is required in the way Japanese law expects, and the regional restrictions sit on top as a separate layer.
This page sets out the ratings, the censorship rule, the US and UK restrictions, the display settings, payments and AI work. It describes pixiv’s published rules as they stood on 17 October 2026.
Key points
- 18+ work is allowed. It must be rated R-18 or R-18G.
- The creator sets the rating. pixiv can change it.
- Censorship is required. Genitals, penetration and graphic wounds must be censored.
- US and UK accounts face extra rules. Since 25 April 2024 some rated content is not shown to them.
- Viewers choose what they see. R-18, R-18G and “sensitive” works each have a display setting.
- PayPal is limited. For pixiv Premium in Japan, it is unavailable with R-18 display on.
- AI work must be labelled. pixivFANBOX bans it outright.
The ratings: all-ages, sensitive, R-18 and R-18G
The rating system is set out in the “About work ratings” section of the pixiv Guidelines, last revised on 18 March 2026.
| Rating | What it covers | Who sets it |
|---|---|---|
| All-ages | Everything else | Default |
| Sensitive | Works that may be sensitive but do not need an age restriction | The creator or pixiv |
| R-18 | “Anything that can be associated with, or represents sex” | The creator, adjustable by pixiv |
| R-18G | “Violent scenes, ideas, and imitative depictions that are to be considered highly dangerous or shocking” | The creator, adjustable by pixiv |
The obligation is on the creator. The guidelines say that “if your work contains content unsuitable for viewers under 18, regardless of the creation process”, it must carry the age restriction. They add that pixiv may adjust or add restrictions itself.
The phrase “regardless of the creation process” is doing work. It means a drawing, a 3D render and an AI image are all rated by what they show, not by how they were made.
The sensitive rating is the newer layer. pixiv introduced it in November 2024, in a notice dated 5 November that year, for works that “might not need age restrictions but could still include sensitive content”. It sits between all-ages and R-18, and can be assigned by pixiv’s own review as well as by the creator.
Does pixiv allow gore?
Yes, under R-18G. The rating exists for exactly that, and the guidelines treat it the same way as R-18.
The censorship rule covers both. Alongside genitals, it lists “graphic depictions of wounds, lacerations, etc.” among the things that “must be censored appropriately”. R-18G work is therefore allowed, but not unedited.
The censorship rule
The guidelines have a section headed “Content Requiring Censorship”. Its core sentence: “Genitalia, images of penetration, and graphic depictions of wounds, lacerations, etc. must be censored appropriately.”
The rule is specific about what counts as appropriate.
- The censoring must cover the outline. It is not enough to cover part of what is being hidden.
- It must be on the same layer. A separate overlay that can be removed does not count.
- Mosaic squares must be at least 4 by 4 pixels. A mosaic so fine that it hides nothing is not a mosaic.
This reflects the legal position in Japan, where Article 175 of the Penal Code on obscene material has led publishers of all kinds to censor explicit work. For the background, see mosaic censorship explained.
The practical point for creators outside Japan is that pixiv applies this rule to everyone. A work that is legal to publish uncensored where the artist lives can still break pixiv’s guidelines.
The US and UK restrictions
On 22 April 2024 pixiv announced new terms titled “Restrictions for Healthy Expression in Specific Countries and Regions”. They took effect on 25 April 2024 and apply to users whose account region is set to the United States or the United Kingdom.
404 Media and Automaton reported the change at the time. According to 404 Media, the restricted categories include:
- sexualised depictions of minors;
- bestiality;
- non-consensual depictions and deepfakes;
- content that would be obscene under the Miller test, the American legal standard for obscenity that falls outside constitutional protection.
The current version of the regional terms, on pixiv’s policies page, was last revised on 10 November 2025. Its US and UK section sets the age threshold for prohibited depictions of minors as the greater of 18 and the local age of majority, and it expressly includes “simulated (including AI-generated)” content.
Three points about how this works.
- It turns on the account region, not the connection. The rules apply to accounts whose region is set to the US or UK.
- It applies to viewing and posting. Restricted content is not shown to those accounts, and those accounts cannot post it.
- It sits on top of the ratings. A work correctly rated R-18 can still be hidden from a US or UK account if it falls into a restricted category.
pixiv did not give a detailed legal rationale in its announcement. 404 Media’s report connected it to laws in both countries that are tightening around sites allowing erotic content.
Why you can’t see R-18 works on pixiv
This is one of the most common complaints about the site, and there are three usual causes.
The display setting is off. pixiv lets each user choose whether to show R-18 and R-18G works, and since November 2024 whether to show sensitive works. The notice says the sensitive setting can be changed at any time under Settings, then Display, on the desktop or mobile browser. It cannot be changed in the app.
The work is behind the sensitive layer. With the sensitive setting off, the November 2024 notice says such works are not displayed in search or Discovery, thumbnails are blurred in followed works, bookmarks and rankings, and the work page itself is blurred until the viewer presses Show.
The account region is the US or UK. Restricted content is not shown, whatever the display settings say.
pixiv’s encyclopedia, a separate all-ages site, notes that an “R-18” tag on its own does not restrict anything. It is the rating set at posting, not a tag, that hides a work.
Does pixiv accept PayPal?
People ask this because of a 2024 change that tied payment to the R-18 setting.
On 21 March 2024 KAI-YOU reported that PayPal could no longer be chosen when registering for pixiv Premium, the site’s paid subscription, if the user’s R-18 or R-18G display setting was turned on. The restriction applied to users in Japan. The report quotes pixiv saying it made the change after being told the arrangement conflicted with PayPal’s terms. PayPal was also made temporarily unavailable for pixiv Request, the commission feature.
Credit cards, Google Play and App Store billing in the app, carrier billing and ticket payments remained available, according to the same report.
This is consistent with PayPal’s own rules on adult material, which we cover in does PayPal allow adult content. It means a user who wants both pixiv Premium and R-18 display usually pays by card or through the app store.
pixivFANBOX is a separate service with its own rules
pixivFANBOX, pixiv’s paid membership service for creators, is governed by its own Individual Terms on the same policies page.
- Creators must declare R-18 posting. The terms ask creators to set “R-18 Content posting” to post or do not post.
- pixiv can change the setting. If it decides a creator’s content is R-18, it may change the setting without prior consent or notice.
- No refunds follow. If a change makes content unviewable to supporters, their support money is not refunded.
- AI-generated content is prohibited. FANBOX bans what the company defines as AI-generated content.
Payment problems on FANBOX are their own subject. See why pixivFANBOX payments fail, and for the comparable Japanese service, how to pay on Fantia.
AI-generated 18+ work
On pixiv itself, AI work is allowed if it is labelled. The guidelines say: “All AI-generated work posted to the Service must be labeled as such.” They define it as work where all or most of the production process is done by AI, and say unlabelled work may be labelled automatically.
AI work is rated like any other work, so AI-generated R-18 content must carry the R-18 rating and meet the censorship rule. On FANBOX it is prohibited, as above.
What this means for adult game developers
pixiv is a natural home for the art side of an adult game, particularly one aimed at Japanese-speaking players.
- Rate everything honestly. Under-rating risks pixiv changing the rating itself.
- Censor to pixiv’s standard. The same art you sell uncensored elsewhere needs a censored version here.
- Expect US and UK players to see less. Depending on content, part of your gallery may be hidden from them.
- Use FANBOX with care. It suits paid early access and art packs, but not AI art, and payment can be harder for overseas supporters.
- Link to the store for the game itself. pixiv is a gallery, not a shop for games.
For the stores that sell adult games and how they compare, see DLsite vs Steam and where adult games can be sold in 2026.
What is still unknown
- How pixiv decides the sensitive rating. The guidelines give criteria but no threshold.
- Whether the PayPal restriction still applies. We found no later report that it was lifted.
- How the regional restriction treats travellers. The rules follow the account region; we have not tested a change of region.
How this page was put together
The rules are quoted from pixiv’s Guidelines (revised 18 March 2026), its terms and regional restrictions (revised 10 November 2025 and 22 June 2026) and its November 2024 notice on the sensitive setting, all read on 17 October 2026. The account of the April 2024 restrictions comes from 404 Media and Automaton. The PayPal restriction comes from KAI-YOU’s report, which quotes pixiv.
The studio has not tested pixiv’s moderation, and nothing here is a first-hand account of a rating change. Where pixiv’s wording used terms this site does not print, the rule has been paraphrased and the source is linked.
This page was written on 17 October 2026 and will be updated when pixiv’s guidelines change. To report an error, see the corrections standard.
Questions
Does pixiv allow 18+ content?
Yes. pixiv's guidelines provide two age-restricted ratings, R-18 for sexual content and R-18G for extreme violence and gore. The creator must apply the rating when posting, and genitals and penetration must be censored.
What is the difference between R-18 and R-18G on pixiv?
R-18 covers anything that can be associated with or represents sex. R-18G covers violent scenes, ideas and depictions pixiv considers highly dangerous or shocking. Both are hidden from viewers who have not chosen to display them.
Does pixiv allow gore?
Yes, under the R-18G rating. pixiv's guidelines say graphic depictions of wounds and lacerations must be censored appropriately, in the same way sexual content is.
Do you have to censor R-18 work on pixiv?
Yes. The guidelines say genitalia and images of penetration must be censored appropriately. The censoring must cover the outline of what it hides, and mosaic squares must be at least 4 by 4 pixels.
Why can't I see R-18 works on pixiv?
Usually because the display setting is off, or because your account region is set to the US or UK. Since April 2024, accounts in those regions cannot see content pixiv's regional rules restrict, even if it is correctly rated R-18.
Does pixiv accept PayPal?
For pixiv Premium, with a catch. KAI-YOU reported in March 2024 that users in Japan with the R-18 display setting turned on cannot choose PayPal, after pixiv was told this conflicted with PayPal's terms. Credit cards and app store billing remained available.
Does pixiv allow AI-generated 18+ work?
pixiv itself allows AI-generated work if it is labelled as such, and R-18 rules apply as usual. pixivFANBOX, pixiv's paid membership service, prohibits AI-generated content under its own terms.
