Reddit allows NSFW content. Nothing in the Reddit Rules bans adult material. What the rules require is a label: Rule 6 asks people to “ensure people have predictable experiences on Reddit by properly labeling content and communities, particularly content that is graphic, sexually-explicit, or offensive”. Reddit’s help centre adds the age condition, saying it confirms a person is 18 or over “before you can access Not Safe for Work (NSFW) content or mature communities”.
Reddit has not removed NSFW content either. That question is asked often because the content has become harder to reach. It is gated behind age confirmation, the setting has gone from the iPhone app, and the feeds that once surfaced it have been changed or retired.
This page sets out what the rules say, how to turn mature content on, what actually changed, and where Reddit checks age. It is written for people who use Reddit and for adult game developers who post there. It describes Reddit’s published rules and help pages as they stood on 11 October 2026.
Key points
- Adult content is allowed when labelled. The requirement is in Rule 6.
- Viewers must be 18 or over. Reddit says mature content is gated by default for younger users and cannot be unlocked without confirming age.
- The setting is called Show mature (18+) content. It is off until the account holder switches it on.
- The iOS app no longer has the setting. It is changed in a browser.
- Reddit predicts age before it asks. Many adults are never asked to verify.
- The United Kingdom, the European Union, Australia and Brazil have their own rules.
- NSFW posts and profiles cannot be advertised.
What the Reddit Rules say
The Reddit Rules are eight short rules that apply to everyone. Three of them bear on adult content.
| Rule | What it says |
|---|---|
| Rule 3 | “Never post or threaten to post intimate or sexually-explicit media of someone without their consent.” |
| Rule 4 | “Do not share or encourage the sharing of sexual, abusive, or suggestive content involving minors.” |
| Rule 6 | Label content and communities properly, “particularly content that is graphic, sexually-explicit, or offensive” |
Rules 3 and 4 are prohibitions. Rule 6 is the opposite kind of rule. It assumes sexually explicit content exists on the service and tells people how to handle it.
Reddit’s help centre describes the label this way: NSFW “is used as a warning to indicate that the content may be inappropriate or explicit for certain environments, such as workplaces or public spaces”, and it “can include explicit images, adult discussions, or any other material that may not be suitable for all Reddit users”.
Each community then sets its own rules on top. Rule 2 tells people to abide by them. A community can ban adult content entirely, allow it occasionally with a tag, or exist for it.
Does Reddit allow NSFW art and game content?
Yes. The sitewide rules make no distinction that excludes drawn or rendered work, and one help page addresses it directly.
Reddit’s page on intimate media posted without consent explains Rule 3 and then says what it does not cover: “the rule does not apply to media distributed commercially with the consent of those depicted, AI-generated sexual media that depicts fictional people or characters, or artistic depictions (e.g., cartoons, anime, etc.)”.
The same page is strict about real people. It prohibits depictions of a real person “that may have been AI-generated or faked”. Fictional characters are outside that rule. Real individuals are inside it, whatever the tool.
Rule 4 applies to everything. Content that sexualises minors is banned in any form.
How to turn on NSFW content on Reddit
Reddit’s help page on viewing NSFW communities gives a route for each version of the site.
| Where | Steps |
|---|---|
| Reddit.com | Log in and open Settings. Under the Preferences tab, switch on Show mature (18+) content |
| Old Reddit | Log in and open preferences. Under content options, tick the box confirming you are over eighteen and willing to view adult content |
| Android app | Open Settings, scroll to View Options, and switch on the NSFW setting |
| iOS app | Change the setting on reddit.com in a browser, then restart the app |
A second setting blurs mature images until they are clicked. Reddit notes that the choice applies to the whole account: “After your settings are saved, this setting will be updated across all platforms.”
It also adds a caution: “In some countries, you may be asked to enter your birthdate.”
Did Reddit remove NSFW content? What actually changed
No. The communities are there. Five changes explain why people think otherwise.
1. The setting left the iOS app. Reddit’s help centre says: “Due to Apple requirements, the toggles to manage NSFW (18+) content have been removed from the Reddit iOS app.” Someone who opens the app’s settings and finds nothing concludes that the option has gone. It has moved to the browser.
2. Mature content is gated by age. Reddit’s page on minimum ages says that for users under 18, “mature content and communities are gated by default and cannot be ‘unlocked’ without confirming your age”. An adult whom Reddit’s systems take for a teenager meets the same gate.
3. Logged-out browsing is narrower. The same page says Reddit can generally be browsed without an account, “but you’ll be asked to login to access certain features and content based on your verified or predicted age”.
4. The r/all feed was retired. The Tech Buzz reported in April 2026 that Reddit had deprecated r/all after removing it from its mobile apps as an experiment in January. The report says r/all had let some NSFW posts through, and that r/popular, the feed Reddit now points people to, filters NSFW content out entirely.
5. NSFW communities carry no ads. TechCrunch reported that Reddit changed its policy in April 2019 to bar ads from NSFW communities. This does not hide them. It does mean Reddit has no commercial reason to promote them.
None of the five is a removal. Each one makes the content less visible to someone who is not looking for it, or who has not been confirmed as an adult.
The 2023 episode
One event from June 2023 still shapes how the question is asked. During a protest over Reddit’s pricing for outside apps, moderators of several large communities marked them NSFW, which removed advertising from them. TechCrunch quoted Reddit’s response: “Changing a previously SFW community to an NSFW community in order to protest Reddit policies is inappropriate.” Reddit removed some moderators. The dispute was about labels being used as a weapon, and it ended with the labels restored. No adult community was removed because of it.
How Reddit decides whether you are an adult
Reddit’s page on why it asks for age describes a system that tries to avoid asking.
It first looks for signals. The page lists them:
- the account’s email address and domain;
- the age of the account;
- posts, comments and subscriptions, “including on age-related subreddits”;
- the birthdate given at sign-up or in settings;
- any earlier verification;
- age signals from app stores and outside providers.
“If our system determines you are an adult through these signals, you generally won’t be asked for further information to verify your age.”
When the system cannot tell, Reddit asks. It offers two routes.
| Method | What Reddit says about it |
|---|---|
| App store signals | The Reddit app can take an age range from an Apple account or, in a few regions, a Google account. Reddit receives only the range, “not your actual birthdate” |
| Persona | A photo of a government ID or a facial selfie, handled by a partner. “Reddit does not receive or store these photos” |
Someone restricted because of a wrong prediction can file a request to correct the age information. The page links to the form.
Where the rules differ by country
Reddit’s help centre has a page for each place where a law changes the default.
| Place | What Reddit says |
|---|---|
| United Kingdom | It asks for a birthdate when someone attempts to access mature or restricted content. Verification is through an Apple account or Persona. Users who do not verify “may experience limited access to anonymous browsing features” |
| European Union, EEA and Switzerland | It requires age confirmation “if we have information indicating you are under 18” and the person attempts to access mature content |
| Australia | The minimum age for an account is 16. Users under 18 cannot access mature content. Verification is also possible through a bank, using Persona’s ConnectID integration |
| Brazil | Users under 18 cannot access mature content. Under-16s need a parent or guardian’s approval to use Reddit |
The United Kingdom was first. Reddit announced verification there in July 2025, ahead of the Online Safety Act deadline, as Rappler reported at the time.
The wording for the European Union is narrower than for the United Kingdom. In the United Kingdom the trigger is the attempt to reach mature content. In the European Union it is that attempt combined with information suggesting the person is under 18.
For the same laws on other services, see does Discord allow NSFW servers, does Bluesky allow NSFW content and Steam age verification and adult games.
NSFW profiles and advertising
A profile can be marked NSFW as well as a post. Reddit’s page on NSFW profiles gives two reasons it happens: the account “participated in a NSFW community”, or its profile image or other profile content “has been identified as mature or sexually explicit”.
The effects are listed too. All posts on the profile are marked NSFW, visitors have to confirm they are over 18, and the account becomes “ineligible to run ads on Reddit”.
Advertising is closed from the other side as well. Reddit’s page on promoting a post lists the conditions, and the first is that the post must “not be marked NSFW”.
What this means for adult game developers
Reddit is a place where an adult game can be discussed and shown, subject to the community it is posted in. Five points follow from the rules above.
- Read the community’s rules first. Sitewide rules allow labelled adult content. Each community decides whether it wants it, and whether it tolerates developers promoting their own work.
- Tag every explicit post. Rule 6 is the rule that makes the content permissible.
- Expect your profile to be marked. Taking part in NSFW communities is one of the two listed reasons a profile is marked NSFW.
- Do not plan on paid reach. An NSFW post cannot be promoted and an NSFW profile cannot run ads.
- Expect a smaller audience in gated countries. Readers who have not confirmed their age cannot open the post.
Reddit does not sell the game. For that, see where adult games can be sold in 2026. For the other large networks, see does Twitter (X) allow NSFW content and does Tumblr allow NSFW content.
What is still unknown
- Exactly what a logged-out visitor can see. Reddit says access depends on “verified or predicted age” and does not publish the detail.
- How accurate the age prediction is. Reddit lists the signals and gives no error rate.
- Whether r/popular’s filter has exceptions. The description comes from one news report.
- Which countries come next. Reddit’s help centre has added country pages as laws took effect.
How this page was put together
The rules are quoted from the Reddit Rules and from the Reddit help centre articles listed in the sources, all read on 11 October 2026. The help centre shows most of the age-related articles were edited between June and October 2026, so this area is changing and the wording may differ when you read it.
The 2019 advertising change and the 2023 protest are taken from TechCrunch. The retirement of r/all is taken from one report and has not been checked against a statement from Reddit.
The studio has not tested Reddit’s age verification, and nothing here is a first-hand account of it.
This page was written on 11 October 2026 and will be updated when Reddit changes its rules. To report an error, see the corrections standard.
Questions
Does Reddit allow NSFW content?
Yes. Reddit's rules do not ban adult content. Rule 6 requires that content and communities be properly labelled, particularly content that is graphic, sexually explicit or offensive. Viewers must be at least 18, and Reddit's help centre says it confirms a person is 18 or over before they can access NSFW content or mature communities.
Did Reddit remove NSFW content?
No. NSFW communities are still on Reddit. What changed is how easily they are reached: mature content is gated behind age confirmation, the iOS app no longer has the setting, the r/all feed was retired in 2026 and the r/popular feed filters NSFW content out.
Did Reddit remove NSFW from the app?
It removed the setting from the iOS app, not the content. Reddit's help centre says that due to Apple requirements the toggles to manage NSFW content have been removed from the Reddit iOS app. The setting is changed on the mobile web or a desktop browser and then syncs to the app.
How do I turn on NSFW on Reddit?
Log in at reddit.com, open Settings, and under the Preferences tab switch on Show mature (18+) content. On Android the setting is under View Options in the app. On iOS it has to be changed in a browser, after which the app should be restarted.
Can I see NSFW content on Reddit without an account?
Reddit says it can generally be browsed without an account, and that people will be asked to log in to access certain features and content based on their verified or predicted age. Its page for the United Kingdom adds that users there who do not verify their age may have limited access to anonymous browsing.
Does Reddit require age verification for NSFW?
In some cases. Reddit says it uses signals such as account age to predict whether someone is an adult, and asks for verification when it cannot tell. Its help centre has country pages for the United Kingdom, the European Union, Australia and Brazil. Verification is through an Apple or Google account or through its partner Persona.
Does Reddit allow NSFW ads?
No. Reddit's help centre says a post must not be marked NSFW to be promoted, and that a profile marked NSFW is ineligible to run ads. TechCrunch reported that Reddit stopped placing ads in NSFW communities in April 2019.
Can adult game developers post on Reddit?
Yes, within each community's own rules. Reddit's sitewide rules allow labelled adult content, and its rule on intimate media says it does not apply to artistic depictions such as cartoons and anime. Whether self-promotion is welcome is decided by each community's moderators.
