Does Discord allow NSFW servers? The rules after age verification

Discord allows NSFW content, including sexually explicit content, for adults. It has to sit behind an age-restricted label, and it may not appear anywhere that cannot be age-restricted. That second condition rules out profile pictures, banners, emoji, stickers and server icons. A server built around adult content must be marked as an age-restricted server, and teens cannot enter it.

Most of what ranks for this question was written in 2021, when the news was a block on Apple devices. The rules have moved since. Discord now sorts accounts into age groups, and an account whose age group is unconfirmed is treated like a teen’s for adult content until its owner confirms otherwise. This page sets out the rule for each part of Discord, with the source for each, as published on 7 October 2026. It is not legal advice.

Key points

  • Adult content is allowed for users aged 18 or older. Discord’s policy says it allows adult users “to share sexual content that complies with our policies”.
  • It must be in an age-restricted channel. Server owners “must apply an age-restricted label” to channels with sexually explicit content.
  • It is banned on surfaces that cannot be gated: avatars, banners, bios, custom statuses, server icons, invite backgrounds, emoji and stickers.
  • Servers centred on adult content must be age-restricted as a whole. Discord applies the label itself if the owner does not.
  • Age group now decides access. Teens are blocked. Unconfirmed accounts must confirm they are adults.
  • iOS has extra limits. Adults opt in on desktop, and the most explicit servers are blocked on iOS.
  • It cannot be sold through Discord. Paid server features exclude sexually explicit content.

What Discord’s rules say

The governing text is rule 9 of Discord’s Community Guidelines, effective 29 September 2025. It has three parts.

“Do not make sexually explicit content available to anyone under the age of 18. Discord users must be aged 18 or older to view, gain access to, or participate in adult sexual content on Discord.”

“Server owners must apply an age-restricted label to any channels that contain sexually explicit content involving adults or content involving adults that is shared solely for the purposes of sexual gratification.”

“Users may not post sexually explicit content in any space that cannot be age-restricted, including in avatars, custom statuses or bios, server banners, server icons, invite splashes, emoji, and stickers.”

Discord’s sexual content policy explainer defines the terms. Sexually explicit content is “any content that presents genitalia, female nipples, the anus, or sexual activity without censoring or obscuring it”. Sexually suggestive content “may evoke sexual arousal without being overt”. The age-restriction rules attach to the first category.

Discord uses “age-restricted” where users say NSFW. The setting was once labelled NSFW in the app, and the meaning is the same.

The rule for each part of Discord

Part of Discord Sexually explicit content Condition or reason Source
Text channel in a server Allowed The channel must be marked age-restricted Community Guidelines, rule 9
Whole server Allowed Must be marked age-restricted if organised around adult content Age-restricted servers article
Direct messages Not prohibited between consenting adults “Unless you’re sure they want to see or receive it” Sexual content policy explainer
Avatar, profile banner, About Me, display name Not allowed Profile surfaces cannot be age-restricted Sexual content policy explainer
Custom status and bio Not allowed Named in rule 9 Community Guidelines, rule 9
Server name, icon, banner, invite link and invite background Not allowed Visible to people outside the server Sexual content policy explainer
Emoji and stickers Not allowed Can be used elsewhere on the platform Sexual content policy explainer
App and bot commands Allowed if labelled Only in age-restricted channels, or in DMs after opting in Age-restricted commands article
Server subscriptions, app subscriptions, server shop Not allowed Excluded from monetised content Monetization policy

The logic of the table is one idea applied nine times. Discord permits adult content where it can put a gate in front of it, and prohibits it where it cannot.

Does Discord allow NSFW servers?

Yes. The explainer states the conditions in one sentence: “Servers can host sexually explicit content within their server as long as it does not violate our policies, the server owner and moderators are all over the age of 18 and any channel where sexually explicit content is hosted is marked with an age-restricted label.”

There are two levels of gate.

Age-restricted channels. A single channel is marked, and the rest of the server stays open. Discord’s channel article says anyone opening it “will be greeted with a notification letting them know that the channel may contain adult content and they must be an adult to enter”. The setting is in the channel’s Overview tab and, according to the article, can only be switched on from desktop or a browser.

Age-restricted servers. The whole server is marked. Discord’s server article gives the test: “Servers must be classified as age-restricted if the community is organized around age-restricted themes or if the majority of the server’s content is focused on 18+ content.” Owners, or admins with the Manage Server permission who are 18 or older, can set it under Server Settings. If they do not, “Discord will mark servers meeting these criteria as age-restricted” and notify the owner by system message. An owner who disagrees has to appeal.

The article is clear that one does not imply the other: “Having age-restricted channels in a server does not, however, automatically mean that an entire server should be designated age-restricted.”

Did Discord remove NSFW servers?

No. The question comes from two real events that are often remembered as a ban.

The first was in April 2021, when Discord blocked age-restricted servers on its iOS app to meet Apple’s App Store rules, then narrowed the block after complaints, as Gizmodo reported. The arrangement that resulted is still in Discord’s help pages and is described in the iOS section below.

The second is the move to age groups. Access to adult spaces used to depend on a birth date the user typed in. It now depends on which age group Discord has placed the account in, and an account can be locked out of servers it was already in until its age group is confirmed. The servers still exist. The door has changed.

How age groups changed access

Discord’s help pages describe three states for an account.

Age group Age-restricted servers and channels Sensitive media How it is set
Adult Accessible User’s choice By Discord’s age estimation model, or by confirming
Teen (13 to 17) “Not accessible” Blurred or blocked By Discord’s age estimation model
Unconfirmed Not accessible until confirmed Same protections as teens Discord does not yet have enough information

Discord’s article on confirming your age group says that “for most users, our age estimation model determines your age group automatically”. It admits the model makes mistakes: “a small percent of accounts will land in the wrong group.”

An adult who is unconfirmed or wrongly placed can confirm under User Settings, in Account Status. Discord lists these methods and says availability depends on region and device:

  • Apple App Store or Google Play Store age range. The store shares an age range. Discord says the exact birth date is not shared.
  • Credit card. Checked by a vendor. Discord says only credit cards are accepted, because debit and prepaid cards “can be issued to minors in most regions”.
  • Google Wallet, using a stored passport from a short list of countries.
  • Video selfie. Discord says facial age estimation “happens on your device”.
  • ID scan, and AgeKey.

Discord states that it “doesn’t receive or access any images, ID documents, credit card details”, and that vendors “only pass back an age signal”. In some places the check is not optional. The server article says users “in regions with regional restrictions may have to complete age assurance”, and links separate pages for the United Kingdom, Australia and Brazil.

The same tension over card-only age checks exists on Steam. Our guide to Steam age verification and adult games covers how that store handles it.

NSFW servers on iPhone and iPad

Apple’s platform has two extra rules, both in Discord’s access FAQ.

  1. Opt in on desktop first. “For adults, age-restricted servers can only be joined on desktop or Android devices.” An adult then enables “Allow access to age-restricted content on iOS” in User Settings on desktop, which lets them view age-restricted servers they already belong to from an iOS device.
  2. The most explicit servers are blocked. “A subset of age-restricted servers that are specifically focused on explicit content will be blocked entirely on iOS.” Adults can reach those only on desktop and web. Owners and moderators of such servers are the exception and can still manage them on iOS.

Android has neither rule.

Does Discord allow NSFW profile pictures, banners and emoji?

No, and this is the part of the policy people most often get wrong, because it applies even to an adult in an adult server.

The explainer lists “all sections of the User Profile, such as the username, display name, avatar, banner, and About Me sections” as places where sexually explicit content should not be posted. For servers it lists “the server name, server invite link, server invite background, and server icon”, and adds content “that can be posted elsewhere on the platform, such as stickers and emojis”.

There is one narrow allowance. A per-server profile may carry sexual content only if “the server profile is associated with a server that is entirely age-gated”.

Note the word explicit. The rule is written about sexually explicit content as defined above. Suggestive content is defined separately and is not named in the profile ban.

Does Discord allow NSFW in DMs?

Discord’s rules do not prohibit adult content in direct messages between adults. They attach conditions.

  • Consent. The explainer’s guidance is: “Don’t send sexual content directly to others unless you’re sure they want to see or receive it.”
  • No minors. Rule 8 of the guidelines prohibits “any sexual conduct with anyone under the age of 18”, including “soliciting, sharing, or exchanging sexual content”.
  • Filtering for teens and unconfirmed accounts. For those accounts, Discord says flagged media in DMs from friends is blurred, and from strangers is blocked.

Does Discord allow NSFW art, and what is banned everywhere?

Drawn, rendered and written adult work is allowed in age-restricted channels on the same terms as any other. The label does not make everything acceptable. These are prohibited in every space:

  • Any sexualisation of minors. Rule 6 covers media “involving real, fictional, and/or anthropomorphized children”, and names animation, drawing, text and AI-generated content.
  • Sexual content of real adults shared without their consent. Rule 10 covers explicit and suggestive content alike.
  • Sexual content “likely to lead to serious bodily harm or death”, which the explainer says is disallowed “even if consensually shared and consumed”.

Bots and age-restricted commands

Discord’s article on age-restricted commands says they “may only be used by people 18 or older”. In servers they work “only within age-restricted channels”. In DMs they are “turned off by default” and the user has to enable them. Discord puts the duty on developers: its policies “require that developers label adult content as age-restricted and not distribute it to people under the age of 18”.

What this means for a game studio’s server

A developer running a community for a game with adult content has a decision to make, and Discord’s test decides it: is the server “organized around age-restricted themes”, or is most of its content 18+?

Setup When it fits What follows
Open server, one or two age-restricted channels Most discussion is about development, updates and support, with explicit images kept to marked channels Anyone can join. Teens and unconfirmed accounts cannot open the marked channels
Age-restricted server The community exists mainly to share adult content from the game Teens cannot join. Unconfirmed adults must confirm. iOS users must opt in on desktop

Whichever is chosen, four points apply.

  • Keep the outside clean. The server icon, banner, invite background and custom emoji must not be explicit. Promotional art used there should be the safe version.
  • Moderators must be adults. Discord requires “the server owner and moderators are all over the age of 18” where explicit content is hosted.
  • Do not sell through Discord. The monetization policy bars sexually explicit content from server subscriptions, app subscriptions and the server shop, “whether hosted on Discord or linked from other services”. Its wording reaches further than rule 9: monetised content “may not contain nudity, explicit sexual acts, or content created for the purpose of sexual gratification or arousal”.
  • Expect some members to be locked out. An adult placed in the wrong age group cannot enter until they confirm. A pinned note explaining Account Status saves questions.

A Discord server is a community tool and not a store. Where the game is sold, and through which payment companies, is a separate matter covered in how to make an adult game. For what the NSFW label means from store to store, see NSFW games: what the label means.

What is still unknown

  • How accurate the age estimation model is. Discord says a small percentage of accounts are misplaced and gives no figure.
  • Where the line falls between an age-restricted server and one blocked on iOS. Discord describes the blocked subset in general terms and publishes no test.
  • How suggestive content in profiles is enforced. The written rule names explicit content. Enforcement at the boundary is Discord’s decision.
  • Which confirmation methods are offered where. Discord says the options vary by region and device.

How this page was put together

Every rule here is quoted from Discord’s Community Guidelines, its sexual content policy explainer, its monetization policy, or the help centre articles listed in the sources, all read on 7 October 2026. Discord’s help centre shows most of the age-related articles were edited in September 2026, so this area is changing and the wording may differ when you read it.

Nothing here comes from running a server. The studio does not operate a Discord community, and this page describes published policy, not a tested outcome.

This page was written on 7 October 2026 and will be updated when Discord changes its guidelines. To report an error, see the corrections standard.

Questions

Does Discord allow NSFW content?

Yes, for adults and in the right place. Discord's Community Guidelines say users must be 18 or older to view or take part in adult sexual content, and that sexually explicit content must be posted in channels with an age-restricted label.

Does Discord allow NSFW servers?

Yes. A server can host sexually explicit content if it follows Discord's policies, its owner and moderators are over 18, and every channel holding that content is age-restricted. A server organised around adult content must be marked as an age-restricted server.

Did Discord remove NSFW servers?

No. Discord has restricted where and how they can be reached. Teens cannot enter them, accounts with an unconfirmed age group must confirm they are adults, and on iOS adults have to opt in on desktop first, with the most explicit servers blocked on iOS entirely.

Does Discord allow NSFW profile pictures or banners?

No. Discord's guidelines say sexually explicit content may not be posted in any space that cannot be age-restricted, and they name avatars, custom statuses, bios, server banners, server icons, invite splashes, emoji and stickers.

Does Discord allow NSFW in DMs?

Between adults who both want it, Discord's policy does not prohibit it. The policy tells users not to send sexual content directly to others unless they are sure the recipient wants it, and no sexual content may be exchanged with anyone under 18.

Does Discord allow NSFW art?

Yes, in age-restricted channels. Drawn work is treated like other sexual content. Any depiction that sexualises minors is banned outright, and Discord's guidelines say this covers fictional and anthropomorphised characters, drawings and AI-generated media.

Does Discord allow NSFW bots?

Apps can have age-restricted commands. Discord says these can be used only by people aged 18 or older, inside age-restricted channels in servers, and in DMs only after the user turns the option on. Developers must label adult content as age-restricted.

Can you sell NSFW content through Discord server subscriptions?

No. Discord's monetization policy says sexually explicit content may not be monetised, whether hosted on Discord or linked from other services. It applies to server subscriptions, app subscriptions and the server shop.
