Does Tumblr allow NSFW content? The rules for nudity, art and writing

Tumblr allows some NSFW content and bans the rest. Its User Guidelines say “nudity and other kinds of adult material are generally welcome” as long as a Content Label is added. The same paragraph says “visual depictions of sexually explicit acts (or content with an overt focus on genitalia) are not allowed on Tumblr”, and that covers “pictures, videos, GIFs, drawings, CGI, or anything similar”.

So the short answer has two halves. Nudity, suggestive work and mature themes are allowed with a label. Explicit acts shown in an image are not allowed with or without one.

This page sets out the rule, how the label works, how to turn mature content on, why the iPhone app behaves differently, and where Tumblr checks age. It is written for people who use Tumblr and for adult game developers who post there. It describes Tumblr’s published rules as they stood on 11 October 2026.

Key points

  • Nudity is allowed with a Content Label. The guidelines say so directly.
  • Explicit acts are banned in every visual medium. Photographs, video, GIFs, drawings and CGI are all named.
  • The ban is on visual depictions. The rule does not name text.
  • Mature content is hidden by default. An adult has to switch it on.
  • The iOS app has no switch. It follows whatever is set on the web.
  • Under-18s cannot see labelled posts at all.
  • The United Kingdom and Brazil have age verification. Tumblr announced it on 6 May 2026.
  • Mature blogs may lose monetisation. Tumblr cites its payment partners.

What Tumblr’s guidelines say

The User Guidelines carry the date 9 January 2026. The relevant section is headed “Sexually Explicit Material” and runs to four short paragraphs.

The first sets the ban: “Visual depictions of sexually explicit acts (or content with an overt focus on genitalia) are not allowed on Tumblr. That includes pictures, videos, GIFs, drawings, CGI, or anything similar.”

It then makes one exception, for historically significant art “that you may find in a mainstream museum and which depicts sex acts”. Such work is allowed “with proper labeling”.

The second paragraph gives the permission: “Nudity and other kinds of adult material are generally welcome. We’re not here to judge your art, we just ask that you add a Content Label to your mature content so that people can choose to filter it out of their Dashboard if they prefer.”

The third explains the label, and the fourth deals with money, which is covered further down.

Put side by side, the two halves look like this.

Allowed with a Content Label Not allowed
Nudity Visual depictions of sexually explicit acts
“Other kinds of adult material” Content with an overt focus on genitalia
Sexually suggestive subject matter The same, when drawn or computer-generated
Historically significant art depicting sex acts Any sexual or suggestive content involving a minor

Does Tumblr allow NSFW again? A short history

The question is asked this way because Tumblr once banned all of it.

  • 17 December 2018. Tumblr’s ban on adult content took effect. Before that date the site had been known for it.
  • Late 2021. Tumblr restricted what its iOS app could show in order to stay on Apple’s App Store. In January 2022 it added a sensitive content toggle for iPhone and iPad users, as 9to5Mac reported.
  • September 2022. Tumblr introduced Community Labels, a way for people to mark their own posts as mature. TechCrunch covered the launch and the return of nudity that followed it.
  • 9 January 2026. The current guidelines carry this date. The labels are now called Content Labels, and the ban on explicit acts is unchanged.

The accurate summary is that Tumblr allowed nudity again and did not allow explicit material again. Anyone who remembers the site before 2018 will find the present rule narrower than the old one.

Does Tumblr allow NSFW drawings and art?

The rule does not separate drawn work from photographed work. Drawings and CGI are named in the same list as pictures and video.

That gives a simple test for an artist.

  • A nude figure, drawn or rendered: allowed with a label.
  • A suggestive pose or scene: allowed with a label. The guidelines offer the “Sexual Themes” category for posts containing “sexually suggestive subject matter”.
  • An explicit act, drawn or rendered: not allowed.
  • A drawing with an overt focus on genitalia: not allowed.

“We’re not here to judge your art” is the line most often quoted from this section. It applies to the first two rows. It does not soften the last two.

Does Tumblr allow NSFW writing?

The ban is worded around what can be seen. It prohibits “visual depictions” and lists five visual formats. Text is not on the list.

Tumblr does name text where it means to. Its rule on harm to minors says that prohibited content “may include photos of real individuals, illustrations, animation, or text”. The contrast between the two rules is deliberate drafting, and it is the basis for reading the explicit material rule as a rule about images.

Two cautions belong beside that reading.

  1. Label it. Written mature work is still mature content, and the guidelines ask for a Content Label on mature content of any kind.
  2. The discretion is Tumblr’s. The guidelines say Tumblr reserves the right to enforce them, or not, “in our sole discretion”.

How Content Labels work

Tumblr’s help centre article on content intended for mature audiences describes two settings for a post.

Label What it is for
For Everyone The default. Content that is safe for all audiences
Mature A catch-all for content that is not, including sexual themes, drug and alcohol addiction and violence

A label can be added when a post is created, edited or reblogged. On the web, the control is the “For Everyone” button below the tags area. Clicking it switches the post to Mature. The guidelines add that a person can label a post “as generally mature or choose a specific category such as ‘Sexual Themes’”.

Labels do not come only from the person posting. The help centre says labels can also be applied by automated classification and by human moderators. A label applied that way cannot be removed by the blog’s owner. It can be appealed, using the button at the top of the labelled post.

A blog that posts mature content without labelling it can be classified as mature as a whole. Visitors then see a notice that the content has been hidden because of its potentially mature nature.

One more behaviour is stated without apology: “Some mature content cannot be found via search. This is intentional.”

How to turn on mature content on Tumblr

Mature content is hidden by default. The help centre says users over 18 can change that.

  1. Open account settings on the web or in the Android app.
  2. Switch on Show mature content.
  3. Optionally switch on Blur mature content, which keeps labelled posts blurred until clicked.

Why the iPhone app is different

The help centre says the setting cannot be found in the iOS app. The route is to sign in on the web, change the setting there, then fully close and relaunch the app. The app then reflects the web setting.

For accounts under 18 the app allows nothing further. The help centre says they cannot opt in to mature content on iOS.

Why mature content still does not show

  • The setting is off. This is the default state of every account.
  • The account is under 18. Tumblr’s page on age says under-18s “won’t see posts with Content Labels applied” and cannot click through to blogs flagged as mature.
  • No full birthday is on file. Tumblr says that for accounts created before 17 August 2022 it does not hold a full birthday. A birthday can be entered once and cannot be changed afterwards.
  • The app is on iOS and the web setting has not been changed.
  • The account is in the United Kingdom or Brazil. See the next section.

Where Tumblr checks your age

On 6 May 2026 Tumblr posted an update for users in Brazil and the United Kingdom. It said that people in either country who are 18 or older “will soon need to verify their age” to change content label settings or to view mature-labelled content. Until then, it said, the settings would be locked to hide.

The check is run by a partner, k-ID. Tumblr’s post says “documents are deleted after confirmation, and facial scan data never leaves your device”, and that Tumblr itself receives only the result. PiunikaWeb’s report on the rollout lists the methods as a photo ID, a digital credential, a bank connection and an on-device facial scan.

Tumblr’s minimum ages also vary. The help centre gives 16 for the European Union, the United Kingdom and Australia, 14 for Korea and 13 elsewhere.

The same laws have reached other platforms. We cover them in does Bluesky allow NSFW content, does Twitter (X) allow NSFW content and does Discord allow NSFW servers.

Mature blogs and money

The last paragraph of the rule reads: “Blogs which have a focus on mature content may not be eligible for certain Tumblr features, including monetization options. We need to consider the policies of our partners in the payments space, so the rules there are a bit different.”

Tumblr is unusually direct here. It says in its own guidelines that the limit on earning comes from payment companies. The same pressure shapes Patreon, Ko-fi and the games stores, and we explain how it works in how payment processors decide which adult games can be sold.

What happens if you break the rule

The guidelines describe the sequence in general terms. A person found to be violating them “may receive a notice via email”. If the behaviour is not explained or corrected, Tumblr may act against the account, and “repeat violations of our User Guidelines may result in permanent blog or account suspension”.

Tumblr also reserves the right to suspend accounts or remove content “without notice, for any reason”. Decisions about explicit material can be appealed, and the guidelines point to a help centre article for the process.

What this means for adult game developers

Tumblr suits the parts of an adult game that are not explicit. In practice that means four things.

  1. Post art, not scenes. Character art, backgrounds, interface shots and non-explicit screenshots fit the rule. An explicit scene from the game does not, because the rule names drawings and CGI.
  2. Label anything mature. An unlabelled blog can be classified as mature in its entirety.
  3. Expect limited reach. Labelled posts are hidden from everyone who has not opted in, from all under-18s, and from some searches.
  4. Do not plan to earn there. Tumblr says mature blogs may be ineligible for its monetisation options.

For where the game itself can be sold, see where adult games can be sold in 2026.

What is still unknown

  • What counts as “an overt focus”. The guidelines give no examples.
  • How text is treated in practice. The rule is worded around visual depictions. We found no statement from Tumblr about explicit writing specifically.
  • When verification became mandatory in the United Kingdom and Brazil. Tumblr’s post of 6 May 2026 said “soon” and gave no date.
  • Which monetisation features a mature blog loses. The guidelines say “certain” features and do not list them.

How this page was put together

The rules are quoted from Tumblr’s User Guidelines, read on 11 October 2026, and from its help centre articles on mature content and on age. The age verification details come from Tumblr’s own Changes blog and from one news report. The dates in the history section come from the reports listed in the sources.

The studio has not tested Tumblr’s age verification, and nothing here is a first-hand account of it. Setting names are given as Tumblr’s help centre gives them and can change between versions.

This page was written on 11 October 2026 and will be updated when Tumblr changes its guidelines. To report an error, see the corrections standard.

Questions

Does Tumblr allow NSFW content?

Partly. Tumblr's User Guidelines say nudity and other kinds of adult material are generally welcome when a Content Label is added. Visual depictions of sexually explicit acts, and content with an overt focus on genitalia, are not allowed in any form, including drawings and CGI.

Does Tumblr allow NSFW again?

It allows nudity again. Tumblr banned adult content on 17 December 2018 and reversed part of that ban in 2022, when it introduced labels for mature content. The ban on visual depictions of explicit acts stayed in place and is still in the guidelines dated 9 January 2026.

Does Tumblr allow NSFW drawings?

Drawn nudity is allowed with a Content Label. Drawn depictions of explicit acts are not. The guidelines list pictures, videos, GIFs, drawings and CGI together, so an illustration is judged by the same rule as a photograph.

Does Tumblr allow NSFW writing?

The ban in Tumblr's guidelines is on visual depictions. The rule names pictures, videos, GIFs, drawings and CGI, and does not name text. Written mature content should carry a Content Label, and writing involving minors is banned by a separate rule that names text explicitly.

How do I turn on mature content on Tumblr?

Tumblr's help centre says mature content is hidden by default and that users over 18 can enable Show mature content in account settings, with an optional blur. The setting is on the web and in the Android app. It is not in the iOS app, which follows the web setting after being closed and relaunched.

Why can't I see mature content on Tumblr?

The usual causes are that the setting is off, that the account's birthday makes it under 18, that the app is on iOS and the setting has not been changed on the web, or that the account is in the United Kingdom or Brazil, where Tumblr announced age verification in May 2026.

Can I earn money from a mature blog on Tumblr?

Possibly not. Tumblr's guidelines say blogs with a focus on mature content may not be eligible for certain features, including monetisation options, because Tumblr has to consider the policies of its partners in the payments space.

Can adult game developers use Tumblr?

Yes, for material that stays inside the rule. A developer can post character art, non-explicit screenshots and development notes with a mature label where needed. Explicit scenes from a game cannot be posted, because the rule covers drawings and CGI.
