Visual novel vs light novel vs graphic novel vs manga: what each one is

A visual novel is a game. A light novel is a book. A graphic novel and a manga are both comics. The four are confused because their names overlap, their art styles often look alike, and the same story often appears in all of them.

The simplest way to tell them apart is to ask how the story reaches you. In a visual novel, you play it: text appears on screen over art, with music and sound, and you often choose what happens. In a light novel, you read prose, with a few illustrations. In a graphic novel or manga, you read pictures in panels, with words in speech balloons.

This page defines each one, compares them side by side, explains where they overlap, and sets out how stories move between them.

Key points

  • Visual novels are video games. They combine text, art, music and often choices.
  • Light novels are prose books. They are short Japanese novels with occasional illustrations.
  • Graphic novels are book-length comics. The term is mostly used in English-language publishing.
  • Manga are Japanese comics. They are usually serialised, then collected in volumes.
  • Stories move between all four. Adaptation is constant, which causes most of the confusion.

What a visual novel is

Wikipedia describes the visual novel as a narrative-focused video game genre of Japanese origin, in which the player advances the story by clicking, tapping or pressing a button. The presentation is usually a text box over static character images and background art, with a soundtrack and sound effects. In Japan the form is generally called a “novel game”.

Choices are common but not universal. Many visual novels branch into multiple routes and endings, often depending on which character the player grows closest to. Others have no choices at all. Those are called kinetic novels; we explain the difference in kinetic novel vs visual novel.

Two layouts are standard. In the ADV style, the text sits in a box at the bottom of the screen. In the NVL style, it fills most of the screen, closer to the page of a book.

The form is large. Wikipedia reports that visual novels make up the majority of PC games produced in Japan, with around 500 releases a year, and that by 2024 the Visual Novel Database listed more than 50,000 titles. In the West, free engines such as Ren’Py made the form widely available from the 2010s; for the tools, see Ren’Py vs Godot vs Unity vs RPG Maker vs Twine.

Visual novels cover every genre, from romance and comedy to mystery and horror. Some are adult games; many are not. For the relationship between the two, see the guide to adult visual novels.

What a light novel is

A light novel is a Japanese novel, usually classed as young adult fiction, aimed at readers from their teens to their twenties and older. It is mostly prose. A light novel volume typically has a colour illustration or two at the front and a handful of black-and-white illustrations in the manga style through the text.

Most are published in the small bunkobon paperback format, and successful series run to many volumes, released every few months. Kadokawa’s imprints dominate the market; Wikipedia gives the group a share of 70 to 80 per cent, with Dengeki Bunko and Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko among its best-known labels.

The term itself is recent. Wikipedia credits Keita Kamikita, who ran an online science fiction and fantasy forum, with coining it in 1990. The market grew sharply in the 2000s; in 2009, according to the same article, light novels made ¥30.1 billion in sales, about a fifth of all bunkobon paperback sales in Japan.

Light novels are the source of many anime series. Romantic comedy and isekai, stories in which a character is transported to another world, are among the most common genres.

Light novels and web novels

A web novel is fiction first published online, often free and chapter by chapter. Many light novels began that way and were picked up by a publisher after building a readership. Sword Art Online, first published online in 2002, is the best-known example. The web version and the published light novel are often noticeably different, because the book is edited and illustrated.

What a graphic novel is

A graphic novel is a self-contained, book-length work of comics. Merriam-Webster defines it as “a fictional story that is presented in comic-strip format and published as a book.”

The term is older than many people think. Wikipedia traces the earliest known use to the fan historian Richard Kyle in November 1964. Will Eisner’s A Contract with God, published in 1978, made it widely known, and Maus, The Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen in the late 1980s brought it into the mainstream. Since 2001 it has been a bookshop category in the United States.

In practice, graphic novel is a publishing word. It distinguishes a book from a periodical comic, and it is also used for collected editions of serialised stories. Some creators dislike it for that reason. The term is used for fiction and non-fiction alike, despite the word “novel”.

What manga is

Manga is the Japanese word for comics, and in English it means comics from Japan, or in the Japanese style. Manga are typically serialised in weekly or monthly magazines or apps, then collected in volumes called tankōbon. They are usually printed in black and white and read from right to left.

That reading direction is one quick way to tell a manga from a Western graphic novel in a shop. Another is length. A graphic novel is often a single book. A popular manga can run to dozens of volumes.

Visual novel vs light novel, side by side

This is the comparison people search for most. The two share a culture, an audience and often an art style, but they are different media.

Visual novel Light novel
Medium Software Book
You Play and read Read
Art On screen throughout A few illustrations per volume
Sound Music, sound effects, often voice None
Choices Often, leading to different endings None
Length From an hour to over 100 hours Usually a few hours per volume
Price Like a game Like a paperback

The biggest practical difference is choice. A light novel has one story. A branching visual novel has several, and reading all of them is part of the point.

How stories move between them

Most of the confusion comes from adaptation. A successful story in any of these forms is likely to appear in the others, and in anime.

  • Light novel to manga and anime. This is the most common path. Wikipedia notes that light novels are often adapted into manga, anime, games and live-action films.
  • Visual novel to anime. Wikipedia notes that many Western readers first met visual novels through their anime adaptations in the 2000s.
  • Visual novel to novel. Successful visual novels are often extended in book form. Fate/Zero, a prequel to the visual novel Fate/stay night, was published as a novel series and later adapted into an anime.
  • Visual novel to many media. Higurashi: When They Cry became, in Wikipedia’s words, a transmedia franchise, with an anime, manga, a live-action film, novels and an action game.
  • Manga to visual novel. Licensed visual novels based on popular manga and anime are common in Japan.

So a single title can be a visual novel, a light novel, a manga and an anime all at once. The question to ask is which version you mean.

Which one should you start with?

  1. If you want to make choices, start with a visual novel.
  2. If you want a quick read, start with a light novel.
  3. If you want a story told in pictures, start with manga or a graphic novel.
  4. If a story exists in several forms, fans usually recommend the original. For many series, that is the visual novel or the light novel, not the anime.

Questions

What is the difference between a visual novel and a light novel?

A visual novel is a video game: you read text on screen over character art and backgrounds, with music and sound, and often make choices that change the story. Is a graphic novel the same as manga?

They overlap. Manga is the Japanese word for comics, and a collected manga volume can be called a graphic novel in an English bookshop. In common use, though, graphic novel usually means a self-contained book-length comic, and manga means Japanese comics, often serialised over many volumes.

What is the difference between a light novel and a web novel?
