There is no best engine for a story game, but there is usually a best engine for a particular one. Ren’Py is the default for visual novels because it gives the features players expect for free. Godot and Unity suit games where the story sits inside other systems. RPG Maker suits games built around maps and combat. Twine suits interactive fiction that is mostly text.
This page compares the five on what matters when the game is led by its writing: what each costs, what its licence allows, how you write in it, what it exports to, and which reader features it gives you without work. It describes each engine as it stood on 18 October 2026. Prices and versions change, so check the linked sources before buying.

Ren’Py
Ren’Py is the engine most visual novels outside Japan are made with. Its site says it has been used for “over 8,000 visual novels, games, and other works”, and the current release, Ren’Py 8.5.3, came out on 15 May 2026.
How you write in it. Ren’Py has its own script language for dialogue, scenes, choices and transitions, designed to be readable by writers. Below it is Python, and the site says “its Python scripting is enough for complex simulation games”. A story with stats, schedules or inventory can be built without leaving the engine.
What you get for free. This is Ren’Py’s real advantage. Save and load, rollback, skipping read text, auto-advance, text history, preferences for text speed and volume, and accessibility options all come as standard. Commenters on engine forums make the same point repeatedly: visual novels built in general engines often lack the quality-of-life features readers expect, because each one has to be built or bought.
Platforms. Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, with web export listed as beta.
Licence. The licence page says “Most of Ren’Py is covered by the terms of the following (MIT) license”, with some parts derived from code under the LGPL. It asks that games be distributed in a way that satisfies the LGPL, for example by including the licence text. Commercial use is free.
Where it struggles. Interfaces that do not look like a visual novel take more work, as do real-time gameplay and complex 3D. Developers who have moved away from it cite the lack of a full IDE and weaker mobile tooling.
Godot
Godot is a general-purpose 2D and 3D engine. The current stable release is Godot 4.7.2, dated 18 August 2026.
How you write in it. GDScript, a Python-like language built for the engine, or C#. Godot’s scene and node system suits interface-heavy games, and its 2D tools are strong.
Visual novel support. Not built in. Most Godot visual novels use a plugin, the best known being Dialogic, a free, MIT-licensed tool for dialogue, characters and visual novels. Dialogic 2 targets Godot 4. Features such as rollback or a full history screen may still need building.
Licence. Godot’s licence page says it is MIT licensed and that the licence and copyright “do not apply to the content you create with it”. There are no royalties. If you distribute the engine with your game, you must include its copyright notice and licence statement, and a link in the credits is accepted.
Where it fits. A visual novel that is also a management game, a dating sim with a calendar and mini-games, or anything with an unusual interface. The trade-off forum users describe is time: Godot gives more control, and asks you to build more.
Unity
Unity is the most widely used commercial engine, particularly for 3D and mobile.
How you write in it. C#. Unity has no visual novel system of its own; most developers buy one from the Asset Store. The best known is Naninovel, a paid framework for dialogue, cutscenes and full visual novels. Reviewers note that it repays C# knowledge.
Cost. Unity’s pricing page says Unity Personal is free for customers with revenue and funding up to $200,000 a year, a threshold that took effect with Unity 6 on 17 October 2024. Above that, Unity Pro is required, listed at $2,310 per seat per year prepaid for 2026.
The Runtime Fee. Unity’s proposed per-install fee, announced in 2023, was what drove many developers to look at other engines. Unity says that “As of September 12, 2024, we decided to cancel it”, with immediate effect, and that it was never applied to any game.
Where it fits. Story games in 3D, games with substantial real-time systems, and games headed for consoles, where Unity’s support is mature. For a pure visual novel it is usually more engine than the project needs.
RPG Maker MZ
RPG Maker is a long-running series of tools for making role-playing games. The current version, RPG Maker MZ, was released on 27 August 2020 by Gotcha Gotcha Games and KADOKAWA.
How you write in it. Mostly through an event editor rather than code: map events, conditions, switches and variables. Plugins extend it, and MZ’s plugins are written in JavaScript.
Cost. A one-off purchase, listed on Steam in euros at €77.99 at the time of writing and often discounted.
Where it fits. Games where the player walks maps, talks to characters and fights. Many story-heavy games, adult role-playing games among them, are made in RPG Maker because it gives that structure out of the box. A pure visual novel gains little from it.
Where it struggles. Its look is recognisable, and breaking away from the default interface and battle system takes plugins and work.
Visual Novel Maker
Visual Novel Maker, published by Degica, which also publishes RPG Maker in the West, launched on Steam in November 2017, according to Siliconera. It is a dedicated visual novel tool with a visual editor. It is far less widely used than Ren’Py, and before buying it is worth checking how recently it has been updated.
Twine
Twine is the standard tool for hypertext interactive fiction. The current release, Twine 2.12.1, came out on 6 October 2026.
How you write in it. Passages of text connected by links, laid out on a visual map. Behaviour comes from the story format you choose: Harlowe, SugarCube, Chapbook or Snowman, each with its own syntax. SugarCube is the usual choice for stat-heavy games.
Output. A single HTML file that runs in any browser, which makes publishing simple.
Cost and licence. Free and open source. Its site says works made with it are “completely free to use any way you like, including for commercial purposes.”
Where it fits. Text-first stories, prototypes, and games where writing carries everything. Images, music and sound can be added, but Twine is not built around them, and a visual novel with full art usually outgrows it.
Ren’Py vs Godot, head to head
This is the comparison people search for most, so here is the short version.
| Ren’Py | Godot | |
|---|---|---|
| Time to first playable visual novel | Short | Longer, unless using a plugin |
| Reader features | Built in | Plugin or build your own |
| Custom interfaces and systems | Possible, harder | Natural |
| 3D | Limited | Full |
| Scripting | Ren’Py script plus Python | GDScript or C# |
| Cost | Free | Free |
Choose Ren’Py if the game is mostly reading and choices, or if you are a writer working alone. Choose Godot if the game’s systems are as important as its story, or if you want full control of how it looks and behaves.
What matters more than the engine
- Finishing. An engine you already know beats a better engine you have to learn.
- Reader features. Players notice missing rollback and history more than any engine choice.
- Your platforms. Check export to every platform you plan before you start.
- Your store. Store rules affect what you can publish more than engine licences do. For adult games, see does Unreal Engine allow NSFW games and where adult games can be sold in 2026.

How this page was put together
Versions, licences and prices come from each engine’s official site, licence page or Steam store page, read on 18 October 2026. The account of Unity’s pricing and the Runtime Fee comes from Unity’s own pricing page. Points about what developers find hard in each engine draw on public forum discussion and are presented as common views, not tested findings.
This page compares the engines on their published features. It is not a benchmark, and we have not built the same game in each of them. To report an error, see the corrections standard.
Questions
Is Ren'Py or Godot better for a visual novel?
For a conventional visual novel, Ren'Py. It is built for the format and gives rollback, saving, skipping, text history and preferences without extra work. Godot is the better fit when the game needs systems or interfaces a visual novel engine does not provide, at the cost of building or adding the visual novel features yourself.
Is Ren'Py free for commercial games?
Yes. Ren'Py is open source and free for commercial use. Most of it is under the MIT licence, with some parts under the LGPL, and its licence page asks that games be distributed in a way that satisfies the LGPL, for example by including the licence text.
Is Unity good for visual novels?
It can be, usually with a visual novel framework from the Asset Store such as Naninovel. Unity suits projects that mix a story with 3D, complex gameplay or console releases. Unity Personal is free up to $200,000 a year in revenue and funding.
Ren'Py vs RPG Maker: which should I use?
Ren'Py if the game is mostly reading and choices. RPG Maker if it is mostly exploring maps, talking to characters and fighting. RPG Maker MZ is a paid tool that gives a ready-made role-playing game structure, and story-heavy games are made in both.
Ren'Py vs Twine: what is the difference?
Twine makes text-first interactive fiction that runs in a web browser, with images optional. Ren'Py makes visual novels with characters, backgrounds, music and voice at the centre. Both are free; Twine is quicker to start, and Ren'Py does more with art and sound.
What happened to the Unity Runtime Fee?
Unity cancelled it. Unity says it decided to cancel the fee on 12 September 2024, with immediate effect, and that it was never applied to any game.
Which engines allow adult games?
None of these engines bans lawful adult content in its licence. Godot, Ren'Py and Twine are open source with no content rules. Unity's monetisation services and some stores have their own rules; we cover those separately.
