The itch.io message “payment method not available at this time” most often means the payment button you chose is switched off for that page, not that your card was refused. There are two documented reasons. The page is classed as adult content, and itch.io suspended card payments for adult content in July 2025. Or the seller has connected only one payment provider, so the other was never on offer.
itch.io has not published a page that explains the message. Forum threads about it are answered by other users and by developers, who mostly guess. This guide puts together what itch.io has said in its own announcements and documentation, shows how to tell which cause applies, and says what a buyer or a developer can do. It reflects what was published as of 7 October 2026.
Key points
- The message is about the method, not about you. It appears when a way of paying is unavailable for that page or seller.
- Card payments are off for adult pages. itch.io said on 24 July 2025: “We have suspended the ability to pay with Stripe for 18+ content for the foreseeable future.”
- itch.io has announced no replacement. Its developer updates board carried no later announcement about card payments for adult content when checked on 7 October 2026.
- Sellers choose which methods exist. In one of itch.io’s two payout modes the seller must connect each provider by hand.
- PayPal is the other route, where the seller has it connected.
- Developers cannot override it. The restriction on adult pages is set by itch.io.
What the message means
itch.io does not process payments itself. Its payments documentation says it “works with third-party payment gateways to handle all financial transactions” and lists two:
- PayPal: “Pay with PayPal balance, card, or bank”.
- Stripe: “Pay with credit or debit card”.
Stripe is the “Pay with card” button. itch.io has said Stripe has provided that option on its checkout page “for over 10 years”.
itch.io’s guide to how buying works explains that the payment buttons in the purchase dialog “can vary depending on the methods configured by the seller’s account”. So the set of buttons is not the same on every page, and a method can be missing or disabled for reasons that have nothing to do with the buyer.
The causes, and how to tell which one applies
| Cause | Documented by itch.io? | How to tell | Who can fix it |
|---|---|---|---|
| The page is classed as adult content, so Stripe card payments are off | Yes, in two staff announcements | The page shows an adult content warning or is tagged as adult, and card payment fails while the page itself loads normally | Only itch.io |
| The seller uses “Direct to you” and has connected one provider only | Yes, in the payments documentation | The same seller’s other paid pages offer the same single method | The seller |
| A temporary fault at itch.io or the payment provider | No. Suggested by developers in forum replies | The error clears within hours and affects pages that are not adult content | Nobody. Wait and retry |
| The card itself is declined | Not specific to itch.io | The failure comes after card details are entered, with a decline message | The buyer and the card issuer |
The first two rows are the ones itch.io has put in writing. The third is plausible and unconfirmed. The fourth is a different problem that buyers often mistake for this one.
Cause 1: card payments are suspended for adult content
In July 2025 itch.io came under pressure from its payment processors after a campaign aimed at them. On 24 July it removed adult content from its browse and search pages and explained why. In the same announcement it said: “We have suspended the ability to pay with Stripe for 18+ content for the foreseeable future.”
A week later, on 31 July, it gave more detail. It had spoken to Stripe, which confirmed it would not support adult content that fits the definition “content designed for sexual gratification”. itch.io wrote: “We disabled Stripe payments last week on pages identified as having ‘adult NSFW content.’” It added that with a more specific definition from Stripe it “may review that initial list for potential re-introduction”.
Three things follow from those two posts.
- The switch is per page. Stripe was disabled on pages itch.io identified as adult. It was not disabled for the whole site.
- The list was drawn widely at first. itch.io said it applied the block before it had Stripe’s definition, and that it might review the list. A page with mature themes that is not sexual content may have been caught.
- No end date was given. itch.io said its long-term plan was “to implement one or more new processors to avoid putting the platform at risk”.
Stripe’s own rule is unchanged. Adult content remains on its list of prohibited businesses. Our page on whether Stripe allows adult content quotes it and explains the reason Stripe gives.
A developer selling an adult game on itch.io told a buyer the same thing in plainer terms in a forum reply: developers do not have the ability to set payment methods, and the restriction is an itch.io administration decision that applies to all adult games on the platform. That is one developer’s account, and it matches what itch.io announced.
Cause 2: the seller offers one method only
itch.io gives sellers two payout modes, and the choice changes what buyers see.
| Direct to you | Collected by itch.io | |
|---|---|---|
| Payment methods for buyers | “You have to manually setup each payment provider you want to support” | “You instantly get every supported method” |
| Providers available | PayPal and Stripe | Every method itch.io supports |
| Merchant of record | The seller | itch.io |
| Who is liable for chargebacks | The seller | itch.io |
A seller on “Direct to you” who connected PayPal and never connected Stripe has no card button to offer. Stripe is also not open to sellers everywhere, and itch.io notes that in some regions PayPal requires a business account. Sellers in those places often end up with a single method.
This cause has nothing to do with adult content. It can affect an asset pack or a tabletop game as easily as a visual novel.
Cause 3: a temporary fault
Several forum threads describe the error on pages that are not adult content, with both card and PayPal failing, and developers replying that it seems to be a temporary issue on itch.io’s end. In one thread a buyer reported “Payment method not available at this time” on card and a separate processing error on PayPal.
No itch.io staff member confirms a cause in the threads we read. Treat this one as possible. If the error appears on an ordinary page from a seller whose other pages work, waiting and trying again is reasonable.
Cause 4: the card is declined
A decline is a refusal by the bank that issued the card. It happens after the card details are submitted and usually says so. It is not the same message. If a card works elsewhere and fails only on one itch.io page, the cause is more likely to be the page than the card.
What buyers can do
- Look at which buttons the page offers. If PayPal is there, it is the route itch.io left open. PayPal can be funded by a card, so a PayPal account with no balance still works.
- Check whether the page is adult content. If it is, card payment by Stripe is not coming back on that page through anything you can do.
- Try an ordinary page from another seller. If card payment works there, your card and account are fine.
- Ask the developer where else the game is sold. Many developers of adult games sell on more than one store for exactly this reason.
- Contact itch.io support if the error appears across unrelated, non-adult pages.
Two things are best avoided. Paying a developer by a private transfer outside the store may be offered in good faith, and it means no download key on your itch.io account and no store to turn to if something goes wrong. One developer who offered this to a buyer said as much: “you won’t get the purchase privileges on itch.” And downloading a paid game from an unofficial site to get around a checkout problem carries the risks covered in are adult game stores safe.
If the game has a free version, payment is not involved at all. itch.io returned free adult content to its search pages on 31 July 2025. See free adult games: where to play them legitimately.
What developers can do
- Check your payout mode. Under “Direct to you”, make sure each provider you want is connected. Under “Collected by itch.io” you get every supported method without connecting anything.
- Make sure PayPal is available on an adult page. It is the method itch.io did not suspend in its July 2025 announcements. PayPal has its own restrictions on adult digital goods, set out in does PayPal allow adult content, so this is not free of risk.
- Check how the page is classified. If a game was marked as adult content and is not sexual content, the classification is what switches the card button off. itch.io said it might review its initial list.
- Do not relabel an adult game to get the card button back. itch.io’s creator FAQ requires sellers to follow the policies of the payment processors on their account, and says accounts in violation of its terms “are not eligible for payouts”.
- Tell buyers on the page. A line that explains which methods work saves support messages.
- Sell in more than one place. Our comparison of where adult games can be sold in 2026 covers the stores and their payment arrangements.
What appears on a card statement
The payout mode decides this too. Under “Direct to you”, the seller’s payment provider account is the merchant of record, and itch.io’s documentation says “transactions will list your name (or company name)”. Under “Collected by itch.io”, itch.io is the merchant of record.
itch.io’s documentation does not give the exact text that appears on a statement, and a purchase made through PayPal is recorded by the bank as a PayPal transaction. A buyer who needs to know in advance can ask the developer which mode they use.
Is it safe to pay on itch.io?
For the payment itself, itch.io’s answer is that it never handles card details. Its documentation says: “itch.io never stores any payment information on its servers. Buyers are directed to the payment gateways where they can securely enter their purchase information.” The creator FAQ says the same: it relies on Stripe and PayPal “to handle transactions securely”.
Safety of the file you download is a separate question. itch.io lets anyone publish without a review before the page goes live. That openness is its strength and it is also why buyers should take ordinary care with executables.
Why this happened: the short version
itch.io explained its position in the 24 July 2025 announcement: “Our ability to process payments is critical for every creator on our platform.” It added: “If we lose our ability to accept payments from a partner like PayPal or Stripe, we impact the ability of all creators to do business.”
Stripe told itch.io that it could not support sexually explicit content “due to restrictions placed on them by their banking partners, despite card networks generally supporting adult content (with the appropriate registrations)”. So the block on adult pages does not come from Visa or Mastercard rules directly. It comes from the banks behind one processor, applied by itch.io to protect the rest of its catalogue.
The dated sequence is in our timeline of the Steam and itch.io removals. GamingOnLinux covered the search for new processors at the time.
What is still unknown
- Whether itch.io has a new card processor for adult content. It said in July 2025 that it was talking to other payment partners. We found no announcement that one is in place.
- Whether PayPal is available on every adult page. itch.io’s announcements name Stripe as the suspended method. Some buyers report PayPal failing as well, and itch.io has not addressed those reports.
- What triggers the exact wording of the message. itch.io has not documented it.
- Whether the initial list of adult pages was reviewed, as itch.io said it might be.
How this page was put together
The causes in the first two rows of the table are taken from itch.io’s two staff announcements of July 2025 and from its payments documentation, all read on 7 October 2026. The developer updates board was checked on the same date for later announcements. Forum threads are cited as reports from the people who wrote them and are not treated as confirmation.
We did not reproduce the error ourselves. The studio has nothing on sale on itch.io, and this guide describes what itch.io has published, not a test.
This page was written on 7 October 2026 and will be updated when itch.io announces a change to payments for adult content. To report an error, see the corrections standard.
Questions
Why does itch.io say payment method not available at this time?
The two documented reasons are that the page is classed as adult content, for which itch.io suspended card payments through Stripe in July 2025, or that the seller has connected only one payment provider. itch.io has not published an explanation of the message itself.
Can you pay by card for adult games on itch.io?
itch.io said in July 2025 that it had suspended the ability to pay with Stripe, its card processor, for 18+ content for the foreseeable future. It has not announced a replacement card processor on its developer updates board since.
What payment methods does itch.io accept?
itch.io lists two payment providers: PayPal, which accepts a PayPal balance, card or bank, and Stripe, which accepts credit and debit cards. Which of them appears at checkout depends on the seller's setup and on the page.
Is it the buyer's fault when a payment method is not available?
Usually not. Which payment buttons a page offers is decided by the seller's account settings and by itch.io's rules for the page. A declined card is a different problem and normally produces a decline message from the card issuer.
Can a developer turn card payments back on for an adult game?
No. itch.io disabled Stripe payments on pages identified as adult content, and the decision applies across the platform. A developer can make sure PayPal is connected, and can sell the game on another store as well.
Is it safe to pay on itch.io?
itch.io says it never stores payment information on its servers. Buyers enter card or account details with PayPal or Stripe, which process the payment. The usual care applies to what is downloaded afterwards.
What name appears on a card statement for an itch.io purchase?
It depends on the seller's payout mode. If the seller is paid directly, the seller is the merchant of record and itch.io says transactions list the seller's name or company name. If itch.io collects the payment, itch.io is the merchant of record.
Does the error mean the game was removed?
No. A page can be live and downloadable for existing owners while a payment method is unavailable. Removal and deindexing are separate actions that itch.io took against some adult content in 2025.
