There are plenty of legitimate free adult games. The main sources are itch.io, which hosts thousands of free games from independent developers; Steam’s free-to-play Adult Only titles; Newgrounds, one of the oldest homes of free browser games; free-to-play platforms such as Nutaku; and demos and public builds that developers release themselves. None of these involve piracy, and all of them are safer than the sites that re-upload paid games for free.
This page explains each source, how to find adult games on it, what “free” means in each case, and how to avoid the risky alternatives.
Key points
- itch.io returned free adult games to its search on 31 July 2025.
- Steam has free-to-play Adult Only games, hidden until you enable the setting.
- Newgrounds rates every upload, with an A rating for adult content.
- Free-to-play platforms cost nothing to start and earn money from in-game purchases.
- Demos and public builds are the developer’s own way of giving the game away.
- Re-uploads of paid games are the main source of malware in games and take income from developers.

itch.io
itch.io lets anyone publish and set any price, including free or pay what you want, where the player chooses whether to pay. Many independent developers use it for short games, game jam entries and early versions of larger projects, and many of them are free.
In July 2025 itch.io removed all adult content from its search pages under pressure from its payment processors. A week later, on 31 July, it put free adult content back, reasoning that games with no price tag and no pay-what-you-want option do not involve payment processing. Paid adult games were to return more slowly.
To see adult games on itch.io you need an account with adult content enabled. Pages count as adult when the creator has marked them as containing sensitive material and has tagged them with adult tags. itch.io’s content rules still apply to free games: a list of themes cannot be published at all.
Because anyone can publish on itch.io, check unfamiliar developers before running a download. The routine is at the end of this page.
Steam
Steam carries free-to-play adult games and free demos of paid ones. They sit behind the same setting as every other adult game: tick “Adult Only Sexual Content” in store preferences. Then filter the store by “Free to Play” or browse demos.
Steam reviews games before release, which makes it one of the lowest-risk sources. It is not perfect: in February 2025 Valve removed a free game that turned out to contain malware and warned the players who had installed it. Cases like that are rare.

Newgrounds
Newgrounds has hosted free browser games and animation since the early days of the web. Every upload carries one of four ratings: E for everyone, T for teen, M for mature and A for adult. As Common Sense Media describes, creators answer questions about sexual content, violence and language when they upload, and the rating follows from their answers. Users choose which ratings they see.
Newgrounds is moderated partly by its community, so quality varies widely. It is a good source for short, experimental and older browser games.
Free-to-play platforms
Nutaku, launched in 2015 and owned by Aylo, is the best-known platform built around free-to-play adult games, with browser, download and mobile titles. It reported 50 million registered accounts in early 2020.
Free-to-play means free to start. These games earn money through in-game purchases: premium currency, energy refills, character draws and similar mechanics. Many players never pay. Some spend a great deal. Decide on a limit before you begin, and treat character draws for what they are, a form of chance-based purchase.
Demos and public builds
Developers often give away part or all of a game themselves.
- Demos cover the opening of a paid game. On Steam and itch.io they are listed alongside the full game.
- Public builds are common among developers who fund their work through monthly subscriptions. Subscribers get each new version first, and the developer releases it to everyone for free after a delay. The developer’s subscription page or website will say whether they do this.
- Free releases of finished games happen too. Developers sometimes make older games free when a new one launches, and publishers occasionally give games away for a limited time. In August 2025, GOG and several publishers gave away 13 games for 48 hours as part of its FreedomToBuy campaign.
Getting a game this way is the developer’s choice, which is the difference that matters.
What to avoid
Some of the most visited sites for adult games share paid games without the developers’ permission. They are popular because they are free and comprehensive. They carry three problems.
- Security. A re-uploaded game has passed through unknown hands. Altering an installer to add malware is easy, and researchers find it regularly. Kaspersky’s report on the StaryDobry campaign describes altered game installers that put a cryptocurrency miner on victims’ machines.
- The law. Downloading a copy of a paid game without permission is copyright infringement in most countries.
- The developers. Many adult games are made by individuals or very small teams. A pirated copy is a sale they do not make, and adult developers have fewer places to sell than most.
If a game you want is paid and you cannot afford it, look for a demo, a public build or a sale, or wait for the developer’s next free release.
How to check a free download
- Get it from the official page. Follow the link from the developer’s own site or verified store page.
- Look at the developer. An account with several games, real comments and a history is a good sign. A page created this week is not.
- Scan the file. VirusTotal checks a file against dozens of antivirus engines. One or two vague detections on a small indie game is common; many detections, or one naming a specific malware family, is a reason to stop.
- Keep your antivirus on. If a game’s instructions tell you to disable it, do not run the game.

Game jams
Game jams are events in which developers make a game in a fixed time, from a weekend to a month, often around a theme. itch.io hosts many of them, including jams for adult games, and most entries are free. Jam games are short and sometimes rough, but they are a good way to find developers early and to see ideas that would not survive in a commercial release.
Search itch.io’s jam listings for adult or 18+ jams, then browse the entries. Each jam page links to every game submitted.
Supporting developers without paying
If you enjoy a free game, you can still help the person who made it.
- Rate and review it. Ratings and comments are how players find games on open platforms.
- Wishlist or follow it. On Steam, wishlists affect how visible a game is when it launches. On itch.io, following a developer tells you when they release something new.
- Tell people about it. Word of mouth matters more for adult games, which cannot advertise in most places.
- Report bugs. Developers of free and early builds rely on players to find problems.

Questions
Where can I play free adult games legally?
The main legitimate sources are itch.io, which returned free adult games to its search in July 2025; Steam's free-to-play Adult Only games; Newgrounds, which has an adult rating; free-to-play platforms such as Nutaku; and demos or public builds released by developers themselves.
Are free adult games safe?
Free games from established platforms and from developers' own pages carry the same low risk as paid ones. The risk comes from re-uploads of paid games on piracy sites, where the files can be altered to carry malware.
Are free-to-play adult games really free?
You can play them without paying, but they earn money through in-game purchases such as premium currency or character draws. Set a spending limit before you start, as with any free-to-play game.
Is downloading a pirated adult game illegal?
Downloading a copy of a paid game without the rights holder's permission is copyright infringement in most countries, whatever the content. It also removes income from developers, many of whom are individuals.
Why are there so many free adult games on itch.io?
itch.io lets anyone publish and set any price, including zero or pay what you want. Many independent developers release short games, game jam entries and early builds for free there.
