Does Newgrounds allow NSFW content? The A rating, the art rules and age checks

Newgrounds allows NSFW content. It hosts adult art, animation, audio and games, and it sorts them with a rating system instead of banning them. Adult work carries the A rating, which the site’s guidelines define as “nudity, sex, skintight or see-through outfits that leave nothing to the imagination, extreme gore, fetishes, extreme adult themes”.

The permission has firm edges. Photographs and video of real nudity are banned. Sexual content involving underage characters is banned. AI-generated art is not accepted. And since 2025, users in two countries have had to verify their age before A-rated work will open.

This page sets out the ratings, what the guidelines prohibit, how the rules differ for art and for games, and how the age checks work. It is written for people who browse Newgrounds and for adult game developers who are thinking of publishing there. It describes the site’s published guidelines as they stood on 13 October 2026.

Key points

  • Adult content is allowed with an A rating. The rating is chosen by the uploader and can be changed by a moderator.
  • Only made work is allowed. Photographs of real nudity are banned in art and in games.
  • Underage characters are off limits. A disclaimer about a character’s age does not help.
  • AI art is not accepted. Nor are images built in scene creator programs.
  • Games must run in the browser. A game that needs a download is removed.
  • The United Kingdom and Australia have age verification. It runs through Yoti.
  • Profile pictures and headers must be clean.

The four ratings

Every submission on Newgrounds carries one of four ratings. The Art Guidelines give the definitions.

Rating What the guidelines say it covers
E “Nothing intended to arouse, no violence, no bad language, no adult themes including alcohol, tobacco, drugs or fetishes”
T “Fully-clothed, lightly sexy pin-up, mild cartoon violence, mild explicit language, mild mature themes, no fetishes”
M “Sexualized characters, violence, explicit language, fetishes, mature themes”
A “Nudity, sex, skintight or see-through outfits that leave nothing to the imagination, extreme gore, fetishes, extreme adult themes”

The guidelines add several working rules about where the lines fall.

  • Mild artistic nudity can be M. The guidelines describe this as “non-sexualized butts, mostly”.
  • Nudity with sexual undertones is A. In the guidelines’ words, it “should go ahead with an A rating”.
  • Implied nudity counts. “Anything that gives the impression of nudity”, such as a skintight outfit, “is a safe bet for an A rating”.
  • Censoring does not lower a rating. Explicit work with the explicit parts blurred should still be rated A, because the site does not want censored adult work filling the lower ratings.
  • Thumbnails are stricter. Nudity should not be shown in a thumbnail unless the submission is A-rated.

When in doubt, rate higher

The guidelines say outright that the definition of Adult is moving: “Our standards for what is considered Adult have been expanding, to both better meet the expectations of viewers and to stay in line with growing regulations. If you are uncertain about how to rate your art, it is preferred to rate it on the higher side.”

A moderator changing a rating is described as routine: “Having your content ratings adjusted by a moderator is not a punishment”. Repeatedly posting adult art without an A rating is another matter. The guidelines say such artists “may find themselves de-scouted”, which removes their work from the main Art Portal.

What Newgrounds does not allow

The bans come from three documents: the Terms of Use, the Art Guidelines and the Game Guidelines.

Photographs of real nudity. The Terms of Use say users will not “post photographs containing nudity and/or sexual situations”. The Game Guidelines repeat the ban for photography and video inside games.

Sexual content involving minors. The Art Guidelines say: “Your art may not depict a sexually suggestive image of a child.” They close the usual loophole in the next sentence: “If your art looks like a child but you claim they are 18+ in the comments, it will still be treated as art that looks like a child.” The guidelines name lolicon, shotacon and cub art as falling under the ban.

Aged-up characters. The guidelines extend the rule to “art of characters who are known for being kids, including ‘aged up’ art that is still ambiguous to viewers”.

Adult images of real people. The guidelines say such work “may be treated as harassment and removed”.

Hate content. Art “may not promote hate towards a race or sexuality, or celebrate / fetishize hate groups”.

The Game Guidelines repeat the rule on underage characters with a name of its own: “Adding a disclaimer that all characters are 18+ or Over 18 does not get your submission around the No Grey Areas clause.”

Does Newgrounds allow NSFW art?

Yes. The conditions are about authorship as much as content.

  1. You must have made it. “You must be the artist and creator of the work you are submitting.” Commissioners are asked to let the artist post the piece.
  2. No AI art. “AI-generated art is not allowed in the Art Portal.” A small allowance exists for cases such as an AI-generated background behind hand-made character art, and the guidelines ask that it be disclosed.
  3. No photography. Photographs of hand-made objects such as sculptures and paintings are acceptable.
  4. No scene creators or borrowed models. “Any software where you arrange pre-made assets is not accepted in the Art Portal.” The guidelines name Koikatsu Party, Gacha Life, Source Filmmaker and Daz3D.
  5. Tag fetishes and gore. The guidelines ask for the “fetish” tag plus a tag for the specific fetish, “so people can filter accordingly”.

The fourth rule deserves attention from anyone who makes adult games with a character creator or bought 3D assets. Renders from those tools are a normal part of the adult game scene, and they are exactly what the Art Portal declines.

One provision is friendlier. Teaser images for work hosted elsewhere, “such a Patreon perks”, can be posted if the “Finished Piece?” box is left unchecked. The image then appears on the artist’s own gallery and in followers’ feeds, and stays out of the main Art Portal listing.

Does Newgrounds allow adult games?

Yes. Newgrounds is built around games that play in the browser, and adult ones are accepted. The Game Guidelines set five conditions that matter here.

  • Rate it properly. “Any nudity beyond a non-sexualized butt should fall under the A rating nowadays.”
  • It must be your own work. A modified version of someone else’s game is not accepted.
  • It must run on Newgrounds, in a browser. “If you ask users to download and install something to play your game, it will be removed.”
  • No prompt-generated games. The guidelines call games generated via an AI prompt “shovelware and not your own work”. Other uses of AI must be disclosed in the author commentary, and enforcement is described as “largely subjective”.
  • It must have substance. A game “must not be a pointless ‘demo’ or ‘preview’ without any redeeming qualities”, and must not be made only “to serve ads or promote your site”.

The browser rule shapes what a developer can do. A visual novel built for desktop download cannot be listed as it is. A web build of a self-contained chapter can.

Did Newgrounds remove NSFW content?

No. The adult sections are still there. Two things have changed, and both can make it look as if content has gone.

The first is the widening A rating described above. Work that once sat under M may now be rated A, and A-rated work is hidden from anyone who has not enabled it.

The second is age verification.

Age checks in the United Kingdom and Australia

On 15 September 2025 the site’s founder, Tom Fulp, announced age verification for UK users “per the requirements of the UK Online Safety Act”. It began with A-rated movies and games. An update on 18 September extended it to A-rated art and audio.

On 9 March 2026 he announced the same for Australia, “done in the same way as our UK rollout”.

The posts describe three routes.

Situation What Newgrounds does
The account is more than ten years old “We will assume you are over 18”
The account bought Supporter status more than five years ago A one-time confirmation that the person is now over 18
Neither applies The person can become a Supporter, “to cover verification fees”, and then verify through Yoti

Fulp explained the first route as a version of an accepted method, in which a third party checks how long an email address has been in use. “We have our own long-term data, so we’re using that.”

On privacy, the post says: “Newgrounds will not be viewing or retaining anything you submit as part of your verification, we only receive a pass or fail response from Yoti.” The quickest option is a face scan, and Fulp wrote that Yoti “auto-deletes the image after returning a true or false value to Newgrounds”.

He also said plainly that this would spread: “ID checks will be needed in many more places where similar laws are being enacted, such as Europe and a growing number of US states.”

The third route has a cost. Verification for a newer account sits behind Supporter status, which is paid.

Accounts and adult content elsewhere

Outside those two countries the gate is lighter. In October 2022 Fulp wrote that the site had “re-enabled the registration gates on A-rated content”. The fan-maintained Wikigrounds describes the result as a requirement for an account with a listed age of 18 or over. That description comes from a fan wiki and not from Newgrounds itself.

The Terms of Use set a floor for the site as a whole. Users affirm that they are over 16, “as the Newgrounds Website is not intended for children under 16”.

Profile pictures and headers

The User Accounts page keeps the visible parts of a profile clean: “Your user page may not have nudity / NSFW material in the profile picture or header.”

The reasoning is the same as on other platforms. Ratings and filters work on submissions. A profile picture appears next to every comment and review, where no filter applies.

What this means for adult game developers

Newgrounds is one of the few large sites that accepts adult games directly, and its rules are written by people who expect them. Five practical points follow.

  1. Plan a browser build. Downloads are not accepted.
  2. Rate it A from the start. The guidelines prefer over-rating, and repeated under-rating has consequences.
  3. Check your art pipeline. Hand-made art is welcome. Renders from character creators and third-party models are not accepted in the Art Portal, and AI art is not accepted at all.
  4. Use teasers correctly. Promotional images are allowed outside the main listing. A stream of them reads as ad spam.
  5. Expect a smaller audience in some countries. UK and Australian visitors must verify before A-rated work opens.

Newgrounds is a place to be played and seen more than a place to sell. For stores, see where adult games can be sold in 2026. For other free, browser-based options, see adult browser games and free adult games.

What is still unknown

  • How the wider A rating is applied to older work. The guidelines say standards are expanding and do not say whether older submissions are being re-rated.
  • Which countries come next. Fulp named Europe and US states as likely, with no dates.
  • How AI rules will settle. The Game Guidelines call this “an evolving area” and say enforcement is subjective.
  • The exact account requirement outside the UK and Australia. Our source for the 18-and-over birthday requirement is a fan wiki.

How this page was put together

The rules are quoted from the Newgrounds wiki pages for the Terms of Use, Art Guidelines, Game Guidelines and User Accounts, read on 13 October 2026. The age verification details come from Tom Fulp’s own posts in the site’s news forum. One detail comes from a fan-maintained wiki and is marked where it appears.

The studio has not published a game on Newgrounds and has not been through its age verification. Nothing here is a first-hand account of either. Where a quoted rule used wording this site does not print, the rule has been paraphrased and the source is linked.

Questions

Does Newgrounds allow NSFW content?

Yes. Newgrounds allows drawn, animated and interactive adult content, provided it carries the A rating. Its guidelines define A as nudity, sex, extreme gore and extreme adult themes. Photographs and video of real nudity are not allowed, and neither is sexual content involving underage characters.

Does Newgrounds allow NSFW art?

Yes, in the Art Portal, with an A rating. The art must be made by the person uploading it. AI-generated art is not allowed, photography is not allowed, and images built from scene creator programs or other people's 3D models are not accepted.

Did Newgrounds remove NSFW content?

No. Newgrounds still hosts adult content. What changed is access and rating. It introduced age verification for users in the United Kingdom on 15 September 2025 and in Australia on 9 March 2026, and its guidelines say its standards for what counts as Adult have been expanding.

What do the Newgrounds ratings E, T, M and A mean?

They are the four content ratings an uploader chooses from. E is for content with nothing intended to arouse and no adult themes. T allows lightly suggestive pin-ups. M covers sexualized characters, violence and fetishes. A covers nudity, sex and extreme adult themes.

Do you need an account to see adult content on Newgrounds?

Newgrounds re-enabled registration gates on A-rated content in October 2022, according to its founder Tom Fulp. A fan-maintained wiki adds that an account with a listed age of 18 or over is required. Users in the United Kingdom and Australia must also pass age verification.

How does age verification work on Newgrounds?

In the United Kingdom and Australia, Newgrounds treats accounts more than ten years old as adult, gives a one-time allowance to accounts that bought Supporter status more than five years ago, and sends everyone else through the verification service Yoti after becoming a Supporter.

Does Newgrounds allow adult games?

Yes, with an A rating. The game must be the uploader's own work and must run in a web browser on Newgrounds. Games that ask users to download and install something are removed, and games generated from an AI prompt are not allowed.

Can I put NSFW art in my Newgrounds profile picture?

No. The user page guidelines say a user page may not have nudity or NSFW material in the profile picture or header. Adult work belongs in rated submissions, where the site's filters apply.
