Imgur does not allow nudity or sexually explicit content. The first of its Community Rules after the sharing guidance is “No nudity or sexually explicit content”, provocative or suggestive posts should be marked as Mature, and automated tools remove, hide or restrict images detected as sexually explicit. Its Terms of Service add a rule that matters to game sites: do not hotlink to adult content.
Developers often use Imgur for quick screenshots, mock-ups and tester images, which makes the rules relevant even for games that are not explicit. The detail that surprises most people is not the nudity rule but the hosting rule: Imgur says it is not a content delivery network for your own website.
This page sets out what the Community Rules and the Terms of Service say, how the Mature setting works, how enforcement and appeals work, and what the rules mean for game developers. It describes the pages as they stood on 29 October 2026, with the Terms of Service showing an effective date of 2 October 2026.
Key points
- Nudity and sexually explicit content are not allowed. This is a stated Community Rule.
- Suggestive content should be marked Mature. Mature content is opt-in.
- Context can save artistic or educational nudity. Imgur says it does not try to define art.
- Hotlinking to adult content is banned. So is using Imgur to host a website’s images.
- Automated tools act on detection. Images detected as sexually explicit can be removed, hidden or restricted.
- Warnings accumulate. Several in a short time lead to a 24-hour suspension and then a ban.
- Appeals are free. EU users have extra routes.
The Community Rules
The Community Rules open by describing Imgur as a casual corner of the internet where creativity and positivity are encouraged. They apply to all aspects of Imgur: all parts of a post (title, description, tags and visual content), comments, links and messages. They say moderators consider context and intent.
The rules are eight statements:
- Good sharing practices.
- No nudity or sexually explicit content.
- Provocative, inflammatory, unsettling or suggestive content should be marked as Mature.
- No hate speech, abuse or harassment.
- No content that condones illegal or violent activity.
- No gore or shock content.
- No posting personal information.
- No spam or prohibited behaviour, and no posts that violate the Terms of Service.
Each rule has an expandable explanation, which a plain text view hides. The ones for the second and third rules matter here.
What the nudity explanation says
Imgur says it welcomes a diverse audience, does not want people who stumble across explicit images to have a bad experience, and says it is not in its company ethos to support explicit content, so some lascivious or sexualised posts are not allowed. The explanation lists content that may be covered, and the list includes:
- the gratuitous or explicit display of breasts, buttocks and sexual organs intended to stimulate erotic feelings;
- full or partial nudity, with thong-clad or partially exposed buttocks and close-ups as examples;
- any depiction of sexual activity, explicit or implied, in drawings, print, animation, human or otherwise;
- any image taken of or from someone without their knowledge or consent for the purpose of sexualisation;
- solicitation, meaning requesting sexual content from another person or selling or offering explicit content or adult services.
It then lists content that might be taken down, among them see-through clothing, exposed or clearly defined genitals, some images of female nipples and areolas, certain poses, strip teases, cam shows, sexual fluids, private photos from a social media page and linking to sexually explicit content. It adds that sexually explicit comments that do not include images may be removed too.
Two phrases decide how this applies to games. “Drawings, print, animated” means drawn and animated scenes are covered, not just photographs. And “linking to sexually explicit content” means a post that points to an adult game’s explicit page can itself be a problem.
The room for art and education
Imgur says artistic, scientific or educational nude images shared with educational context may be okay. It adds that it does not try to define art or judge the artistic merit of particular content, and that it focuses on context and intent and on what might make content too explicit for the general community. That is a discretionary standard, with no published test.
What Mature means
The third rule is about content that is not banned but is not for everyone. Imgur says it is a universal browsing experience in which all users browse the same content, so some content is available only by opting in to see mature content. Mature content may include suggestive, inflammatory, unsettling or provocative jokes, stories, tags, audio and visual content, and the explanation gives examples including mild violence, medical work, injuries and blood, and scantily clad women or men. The list continues beyond what could be read.
The rule is also a consequence ladder: content that violates the Community Rules or the Terms may be marked as Mature, restricted in visibility or removed. Marking as Mature is therefore one of the actions Imgur can take, as well as a label the poster is asked to apply.
Minors
The nudity explanation says any content found to be sexualising and exploiting minors will be removed and, if necessary, reported to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. It says this applies to photos, videos, animated imagery, descriptions and sexual jokes concerning children.
The Terms of Service
The Terms of Service show an effective date of 2 October 2026. They say use of the app or website is subject to the terms, the Community Rules and the Privacy Policy together, and that violating the terms or rules can have consequences set out in the text.
The part that matters here is a list of “stuff not to do”. It includes:
- uploading anything someone else might own the copyright to;
- uploading gore, hate speech, or material that is threatening, harassing, defamatory or encourages violence or crime;
- uploading illegal content such as child sexual abuse material or non-consensual intimate images;
- hotlinking to adult content or to file-sharing, gambling, torrent or similar sites, or to sites that copy Imgur;
- impersonating someone else.
It then says not to use Imgur to host image libraries you link to from elsewhere, content for your website, advertising, avatars or anything else that turns Imgur into your content delivery network.
Why the hosting rule matters
For a game developer, the last sentence is the practical one. Screenshots posted to share a link in a forum are ordinary use. A developer who embeds Imgur-hosted images in a store page or a website, or who uses Imgur to serve images for an adult game site, is the case the terms describe, and the first rule on hotlinking to adult content adds to it. Imgur also says that when an account is banned it may delete its content, revoke access and block websites that hotlink to it in violation of the terms. Pages that depend on Imgur images can lose them at once.
Enforcement and appeals
The Community Rules explain how enforcement works. If content breaks the rules it will be removed and the poster warned, with warnings expiring over time. If several submissions break the rules in a short time, warnings accumulate, which could lead to a 24-hour suspension and then a ban. Serious violations, including illegal content and content that condones violence, may mean an immediate ban without a warning. Imgur reports illegal content to law enforcement where required or appropriate.
Detection combines human moderation and automated tools. Moderators review reported content and consider context and intent. Automated tools help detect content that may violate the rules, and certain actions are applied automatically, among them removing, hiding or restricting the visibility of images detected as sexually explicit, banning accounts detected as spam, and suspending or banning accounts that reach the warning limit.
Appeals are free through an Appeal Form. Users in the EU may appeal within six months of the decision, and may also refer disputes to a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body, go to court or contact the Digital Services Coordinator in their member state.
What this means for adult game developers
- Do not post explicit or partially nude game art on Imgur. The explanation covers drawn and animated depictions, and the page lists partial nudity.
- Mark suggestive art as Mature. The rule asks for it, and Imgur can apply the label itself.
- Do not use Imgur to serve your website’s images. The terms describe this as using it as a content delivery network.
- Do not hotlink adult pages from Imgur posts or captions. Linking to sexually explicit content is on the list of takedown reasons.
- Expect automated hiding. Images detected as sexually explicit may be removed or restricted without a human reading them.
- Keep originals. A ban can delete content and break any page that hotlinks it.
- Use hosts built for the job. For distribution and storefronts see where to sell adult games, and for file storage see Google Drive and MEGA.
- Appeal quickly if you think a decision is wrong. The route is free.
What is still unknown
- Where “suggestive” stops and “nudity” starts. The explanations give examples and no test.
- What the automated detection looks at. Imgur does not describe its tools.
- How drawn or rendered game art is treated by detection. The rule covers drawings and animation, and the accuracy of automation on them is not stated.
- Whether the full Mature list changes anything. The part of the explanation that was cut off in the extraction was not read.
- How warnings expire. The rules do not say for how long.
How this page was put together
The Community Rules and the Terms of Service were read on Imgur’s own site, in a browser, on 29 October 2026. The terms show an effective date of 2 October 2026, and the rules page shows none. The rule explanations were collapsed on the page and were read from its underlying text, where the Mature explanation was cut off partway through its list. Short phrases are quoted and the rest is paraphrased.
The author has not been moderated on Imgur, and nothing here is a first-hand account of enforcement. The Privacy Policy and the Moderation and Reporting FAQ were not read.
This page was written on 29 October 2026 and will be updated when Imgur changes its rules. To report an error, see the corrections standard.
Questions
Does Imgur allow NSFW images?
Not nudity or sexually explicit content. The Community Rules put 'No nudity or sexually explicit content' as a rule, while provocative, inflammatory, unsettling or suggestive content should be marked as Mature. Artistic, scientific or educational nude images shared with context may be okay.
What does Imgur mean by Mature content?
Content available only by opting in. The rules say it may include suggestive, inflammatory, unsettling or provocative jokes, stories, tags, audio and visual content, with mild violence, medical work, injuries and scantily clad people given as examples.
Can I link to adult content from Imgur or hotlink Imgur images on an adult site?
The Terms of Service say not to hotlink to adult content or to file-sharing, gambling, torrent or similar sites. Imgur also says it may block websites that hotlink to it in violation of the terms when an account is banned.
Can I use Imgur to host images for my game's website?
The Terms of Service say not to use Imgur to host image libraries you link to from elsewhere, content for your website, advertising or avatars, which it describes as turning it into a content delivery network. Posting a screenshot to share on Imgur is different from hosting a site's images.
How does Imgur find explicit images?
It says it uses human moderation and automated tools. Automated actions include removing, hiding or restricting the visibility of images detected as sexually explicit.
What happens when I break an Imgur rule?
Content is removed and the poster is usually warned. Warnings expire over time, but several in a short period can lead to a 24-hour suspension and then a permanent ban. Serious violations can mean an immediate ban.
Can I appeal an Imgur decision?
Yes. Imgur offers a free Appeal Form, and EU users may appeal within six months and can also use a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body.
